It is produced by the refraction of light through the 90° prisms of ice crystals, having entered through the horizontal bases and passed out through the vertical sides. Normally, the crystals are large, oriented, hexagonal plates. The circumzenithal arc is the high sky counterpart of the circumhorizontal arc. The circumhorizontal arc is low in the sky when the sun is high (above 58° elevation); the circumzenithal arc is high in the sky when the sun is low (below 32° elevation). The majority of circumzenithal arcs are short-lived, short in length and faint or moderately bright. However, very colorful circumhorizontal arcs can occur when the refraction is close to the minimum angle of deviation, corresponding to a solar elevation angle of about 22°. 3, record 19, English, - circumzenithal%20arc

Record number: 19, Textual support number: 1 CONT
3, record 19, French, - arc%20circumz%C3%A9nithal

The first segment to be launched into orbit, designated Z1, will not permanently attach to other truss segments. The Z1 segment is a 10 ft (3 m) cubelike truss made from six machined bulkheads that are bolted together. The truss houses four control moment gyroscopes that form part of the guidance, navigation, and control system. The location of Z1 is nearly in the middle of the station, which makes it an ideal location for the gyroscopes. A micrometeor shield composed of three sheets of 0.25 in. (6 mm) aluminum about 5 in. (127 mm) apart protects the sensitive gyroscopes from debris. The 18,300 lb (8,300 kg) Z1 segment is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of this year. The truss is a transitional structure that will connect to the pressurized Unity module already on orbit. Astronauts will tighten 16 motorized bolts on the circular coupling on the Unity module side into nuts on Z1 and connect the associated utility plug-ins. Pressurized units generally have circular couplings and nonpressurized unit connectors are rectangular. 10, record 22, English, - Z1%20truss

R bar approach of the space shuttle towards the satellite ... along the radius vector. 3, record 40, English, - R%2Dbar%20approach
Record number: 40, Textual support number: 1 OBS
For visualization purposes, the station's direction of motion is called the velocity vector, or V-bar for short. By convention, points in front of the station are said to be on the positive V-bar while points behind are considered negative. The imaginary line connecting the station with the center of the Earth is called the radius vector, or R-bar. Points directly below the station along this line are considered positive while points above are considered negative. Endeavour, then, will approach the station along the plus R-bar. The station will be oriented with its long axis aligned with the velocity vector, with the Unity module in "front" and Zvezda behind. Unity's nadir and zenith ports will be oriented as their names imply. This orientation, or attitude, is known as "XVV, "i. e., the station's X axis is aligned with the velocity vector. The terminal rendezvous sequence will begin with a rocket firing(TI) as Endeavour trails the station by about eight nautical miles. Once the shuttle reaches the plus R-bar, commander Brent Jett will guide the ship up from directly below. As he nears the station, he will yaw the shuttle 180 degrees so its tail is pointing in the direction of motion and its nose toward the minus V-bar. Assuming a good linkup, the shuttle will begin controlling the station's orientation for the duration of Endeavour's mission, moving the lab back into an "X-POP" attitude with the station's X axis perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. In this orientation, the long axis of the station is broadside to the velocity vector. 4, record 40, English, - R%2Dbar%20approach

A radio spectrometer has been built on Bruny Island, south of Hobart, for the study of solar bursts in the rarely observed frequency range from 3 to 20 MHz. This spectrometer is an adaptive device that employs digital techniques to avoid most of the strong terrestrial interference prevalent in this frequency range. The residual interference that cannot be avoided is excised during off-line processing. As a result, successful observations are made down to the minimum frequency that can propagate through the ionosphere to the antenna. This minimum frequency depends upon the zenith distance of the Sun and it is usually between 4 and 8 MHz. 2, record 48, English, - radio%20spectrometer

The imaginary line connecting the station with the center of the Earth is called the radius vector, or R-bar. Points directly below the station along this line are considered positive while points above are considered negative. 4, record 51, English, - R%2Dbar

5, record 51, English, - R%2Dbar

3, record 58, French, - rapport%20signal%20%C3%A0%20bruit
