Automatic reference counting manages object life cycles by keeping track of all valid references to an object with an internal retain count. Once all references to an object go out of scope or are cleared, and the retain count thus reaches zero, the object and its underlying memory is automatically freed.

DEF

A compound derived from a hydrocarbon by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms with fluorine atoms.

CONT

HFCs [Hydrofluorocarbons] are produced synthetically and are used primarily as refrigerants. They became widely used for this purpose beginning in the late 1980s, with the introduction of the Montreal Protocol, which phased out the use of chemicals such as halons and chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) that contribute to the depletion of Earth's ozone layer. However, while HFCs have an ozone depletion potential of zero, they are potent greenhouse gases, and thus their manufacture and use became increasingly regulated in the 21st century.

OBS

hydridofluoridocarbon: form recommended by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC); however, it does not seem to be commonly used.

CONT

Float-type gauges are essentially water level gauges. A float in the gauge receptacle rises as rain water enters the chamber, the rise of the float being recorded by a pen on a suitably calibrated, clock-driven chart. Some float gauges can only record to the capacity of the chamber, but others are equipped with siphoning arrangements to let out the water when the chamber fills and to return the pen to the zero position on the chart. The most serious difficulty with such gauges is in their operation at temperatures below freezing.

OBS

Two types of float gauges are in use. In one type the rain from the collector is led to a chamber in which a float is used to sense the water level (...). A much more versatile type is the storage gauge modified as a long-duration recorder.

DEF

The amount of work that must be done per unit quantity of pure water in order to transport reversibly and isothermally an infinitesimal quantity of water, identical in composition with the soil water, from a pool at the elevation and the external gas pressure of the point under consideration, to the soil water.

CONT

Matric potential is the most important component in soil, but is more difficult to visualize. Water will not freely leave soil unless soil is very wet. This is because of adhesion and cohesion. Imagine placing a clump of dry soil on a table, then dropping a drop of water onto the clump of dry soil. If you elevate the soil off of the table, will the water leap out of it, dropping to the table? Of course not. It will stay in the soil, held by adhesion, or what we often call matric forces. The symbol for matric potential is [psi subscript m]. These values are negative or zero, but never positive, because this water is not free to move to the zero state.... The matric potential of a soil refers to the potential of the most easily removed molecule...

CONT

This work is less than zero, or negative work, thus reported in negative values. Matric potential nearly equals water potential in nonsalty soils.

DEF

CONT

When the temperature sinks on a cold winter's day water vapour becomes water and water becomes ice. These so-called phase transitions and the changed states of matter can be roughly described and understood with classical physics. What happens when the temperature falls is that the random heat movement in gases, liquids and solid bodies ceases. But the situation becomes entirely different when the temperature sinks further and approaches absolute zero,-273. 15°C. In samples of liquid helium what is termed superfluidity occurs, a phenomenon that cannot be understood in terms of classical physics. When a liquid becomes superfluid its atoms suddenly lose all their randomness and move in a coordinated manner in each movement. This causes the liquid to lack all inner friction : It can overflow a cup, flow out through very small holes, and exhibits a whole series of other non-classical effects. Fundamental understanding of the properties of such a liquid requires an advanced form of quantum physics, and these very cold liquids are therefore termed quantum liquids...
