To reconstruct the gridded temperature and precipitation fields ... We first identified all predictors for which data were available for that particular month (season) and all other months from the same climatological season (i.e. winter is December, January and February).

Three daily airflow indices [total shear vorticity, zonal and meridional components of geostrophic air-flow] were used as predictors of parameters describing station rainfall series... All three indices were derived for each climatological season(i. e., DJF [December, January, February], MAM [March, April, May], JJA [June, July, August] and SON [September, October, November) for the period 1881-1990 using daily grid-point sea level pressure data recorded at 5° latitude by 10° longitude intervals across the British Isles.

Astronomical seasons use the suns angle in relation to the earth and length of day to determine seasons: e.g. Summer: June 21, Fall: Sept 21, Winter: Dec 21 and Spring: Mar 21. Climatological seasons are based on temperature - thus the heating lag phenom is a factor.

De même que l'étude des climats modernes repose sur l'analyse statistique d'observations directes et utilise les techniques instrumentales de la météorologie, la paléoclimatologie fait appel à l'analyse statistique d'événements inférés d'indicateurs climatiques. C'est ainsi que de la présence au Groenland de feuilles de palmiers fossiles on déduit que les conditions y furent jadis plus clémentes.

L'indicateur permet d'obtenir, généralement par déduction, des données sur des phénomènes climatiques qui, dans la pratique, ne peuvent être, ou ne peuvent plus être, mesurés directement; les connaissances actuelles du phénomène de réchauffement climatique reposent en grande partie, à cause des lacunes importantes dans les données nécessaires pour une compréhension globale de ce phénomène, sur des mesures indirectes fournies par des indicateurs (par ex. les cernes de croissance des arbres fournissent des données indirectes sur la quantité de précipitations avant les premières observations).

OBS

On ne doit pas confondre les notions de signal, d'empreinte et de signature avec celle d'indicateur.
