The first sign of hurricane genesis(development) is the appearance of a cluster of thunderstorms over the tropical oceans, called a tropical disturbance. Tropical disturbances most commonly form in one of three different ways, all of which involve the convergence of surface winds. Near the equator, the easterly trade winds converge(come together) to trigger numerous thunderstorms in a region called the Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ). Occasionally, a cluster of thunderstorms will break away from the ITCZ and become better organized. Another mechanism is the convergence of air that occurs along a mid-latitude frontal boundary that has made its way into the Gulf of Mexico or off the East Coast of Florida. The last mechanism is the easterly wave, a tropical disturbance that travels from east to west in the region of the tropical easterlies. Converging winds on the east side of the easterly wave trigger the development of thunderstorms. In fact, most Atlantic hurricanes can be traced to easterly waves that form over Western Africa. 3, record 3, English, - tropical%20disturbance

The bioreactor "plug" is made of slotted PVC pipe which is screw cap sealed at each end. Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms. The seed cultures in the bioplugs are a mixture of microorganisms selected for their abilities to biodegrade the contaminants of concern... The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed. 1, record 8, English, - bioplug

Unfortunately, the on/off status often is not an accurate indicator of whether groundwater is reaching the plant root zone, but the rise of water above the water table due to capillarity is detected easily by the monitoring. Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process. 2, record 13, English, - hot%20water%20extraction%20process

2, record 13, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20d%27extraction%20%C3%A0%20l%27eau%20chaude

Retort technology... charcoal processes... The Lambiotte continuous carbonization process is related to the multi-stage type reactor.... Wood is fed continuously through a vertical cylinder into a retort. There, it undergoes three different treatments, moving slowly down to the bottom of the retort. In the first, it is dried, in the second, the charcoal process takes place, and in the third, charcoal is cooled. For the drying stage, pyroligneous gases are removed from the carbonization zone and fanned to the drying zone where they burn with a controlled supply of air. For the cooling stage, gases are removed from under the carbonization stage, where tars have been cracked, and reinjected at the bottom of the retort after having crossed a water cooled system. The sufficiently cooled charcoal is extracted from the bottom of the retort. The level of raw material inside the retort is kept at the maximum height possible. The excess of gas(50%) is generally flared off but can be directed through a by-product recovery system as for the Sific process. The process is fully automated. 1, record 19, English, - Lambiotte%20continuous%20carbonization%20process
