The first sign of hurricane genesis(development) is the appearance of a cluster of thunderstorms over the tropical oceans, called a tropical disturbance. Tropical disturbances most commonly form in one of three different ways, all of which involve the convergence of surface winds. Near the equator, the easterly trade winds converge(come together) to trigger numerous thunderstorms in a region called the Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ). Occasionally, a cluster of thunderstorms will break away from the ITCZ and become better organized. Another mechanism is the convergence of air that occurs along a mid-latitude frontal boundary that has made its way into the Gulf of Mexico or off the East Coast of Florida. The last mechanism is the easterly wave, a tropical disturbance that travels from east to west in the region of the tropical easterlies. Converging winds on the east side of the easterly wave trigger the development of thunderstorms. In fact, most Atlantic hurricanes can be traced to easterly waves that form over Western Africa. 3, record 13, English, - tropical%20disturbance

The Southern Ocean, also known as the Great Southern Ocean, the Antarctic Ocean and the South Polar Ocean, comprises the southernmost waters of the World Ocean south of 60° S latitude. The International Hydrographic Organization has designated the Southern Ocean as an oceanic division encircling Antarctica. Geographers disagree on the Southern Ocean's northern boundary or even its existence, sometimes considering the waters part of the South Pacific, South Atlantic, and Indian Oceans instead. Some scientists consider the Antarctic Convergence, an ocean zone which fluctuates seasonally, as separating the Southern Ocean from other oceans, rather than 60° S. This ocean zone forms from the convergence of two circumpolar currents, one easterly flowing and one westerly flowing. The International Hydrographic Organization(IHO) regards the Southern Ocean as the fourth-largest of the five principal oceanic divisions and the latest-defined one. 3, record 26, English, - Antarctic%20Ocean

A-subduction.-The movement of one continental lithospheric plate under another(subduction) in a collision zone, with the separation of part or all of the upper crust from the lower crust and mantle. The denser material subducts normally whilst the buoyant material can underthrust or overthrust the crust of the overriding plate. A-subduction, named after O. Ampferer, has also been called "delamination, "and is contrasted with B-subduction, named after Hugo Benioff, in which oceanic lithosphere subducts. A-subduction is postulated to involve shortening of a maximum of only a few hundred kilometres, whereas B-subduction can recycle thousands of kilometres of oceanic crust and upper mantle. 2, record 37, English, - Ampferer%20subduction

A growth triangle is a relatively recent addition to the vocabulary of development andinternational economics. A growth triangle forms an economic zone exceeding national boundaries, usually including areas from three or more countries. Unlike trade blocs growth triangles usually do not consist of states as a whole but rather, parts of them so one country can be part of more than one growth triangle. Although a growth triangle would primarily result in international co-operation between areas, it is important for the project's success that it is also considered to be nationally beneficial and that it enjoys political backing at both regional and national level. 2, record 38, English, - growth%20triangle

The exploration department at Cogema Resources ... recognized the technical difficulties and expense encountered in drilling deep vertical holes. The solution was a technique called navigational drilling (or Navi-drilling) that was used in the oil industry and, less often, in mining. ... Simply put, navi-drilling allows operators to begin drilling a new hole 500 to 600 metres below the surface by using a pre-existing "pilot hole." This significantly reduces costs as the same hole is used for up to six navi-drilling holes. A steerable motor with a rotor system turns a cutting bit. The motor is powered by hydraulic force created by the mixture of water and drilling muds pumped inside the drill string. The fluid is pumped through the motor and returns to the surface at a rate of up to 250 litres per minute. [Followed by an illustration of a schematic cross-section showing navi-drilling holes.] 2, record 42, English, - navigational%20drilling

Newbergh Industries Limited ("Newbergh") has developed and patented a technology which will greatly enhance the steering currently being used in oil and gas field directional drilling. This technology, which is known under the acronym of "HANDS", which stands for Hydraulic Activated Navigational Drilling System, will be incorporated in a so-called benthousing, which will make this piece of equipment remote adjustable whilst drilling for the first time. Its implication will improve drilling performance in terms of speed as well as quality and will result in considerable cost savings for the oil companies and savings in energy to drill the bore holes. 6, record 42, English, - navigational%20drilling

3, record 42, French, - forage%20multibranche

Serving as a means of aerial reconnaissance and surveillance rather like "an extended pair of binoculars", DRAC enables an operator to gather, display and process real-time images at a distance of up to 10 kilometres, by day or by night. One of the intended missions of the DRAC system is to immediately detect all presence or advancing infantry units or vehicles at a particular location or within a specific corridor in the command zone of the reconnaissance units, without having to deploy any ground sensors. Each system consists of two fixed-wing aerial vehicles from the Tracker series, interchangeable gyro-stabilised visible-spectrum and infrared payloads, a data link and a portable, multifunction, ruggedised ground station. The latter in turn comprises two sets of functions : for mission preparation and control and for payload operation respectively. The complete equipment is packed in a rucksack that can be easily transported and deployed by two men. This feature makes DRAC particularly suitable for use by paratroopers. The responsibility for developing and manufacturing the DRAC systems has been conferred on EADS, as overall prime contractor, working in partnership with SurveyCopter. 2, record 52, English, - DRAC%20system

The first type of precision airdrop is a single system called AGAS(Affordable Guided Airdrop System) that uses in-service round cargo parachutes. A detailed knowledge of the wind patterns at the drop location is used to calculate the required flight path and drop point. The flight path is maintained by the system's ability to pull slips which dump air from one side of the canopy. By incorporating wind data with this limited method of steering, the system has proven capable of landing an average of 48 meters away from the intended grid reference when deployed from 13 000 ft above ground level. This accuracy is phenomenal given that the present LF freefall cylinder rarely even hits a large drop zone when deployed from 5, 000 feet above ground evel(AGL). AGAS is the cheapest precision airdrop system presently available. 2, record 53, English, - affordable%20guided%20airdrop%20system

1, record 53, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20peu%20co%C3%BBteux%20de%20largage%20de%20pr%C3%A9cision

Ultimate is a team sport in which the team with the higher point total at the end of the game wins. It is played with two teams of seven players on a rectangular field with an end zone at each end. A goal, worth 1 point, is scored when a player/thrower passes the disc to a teammate and it is successfully caught within the confines of the end zone his or her team is attacking. Solely passing the disc from one player to another may advance the disc. A player may not run while in possession of the disc. 3, record 55, English, - ultimate%20frisbee

"Areography" entails the delineation and characterization of regions on Mars. Like terrestrial geography, "areography" would concern itself with the society and environment interaction on Mars, such as the location analytic process involved in selecting appropriate lander sites, the constraints and opportunities of human settlement of Mars, and the human imaginings, perceptions, and feelings about Mars. "Areography" would tend to be more interested in the surface of Mars, the zone of contact among its crust, cryosphere, and atmosphere, and, perhaps, one day, human society there, rather than the deep planetary structure and processes. 2, record 67, English, - areography

We have a lot of commercial zoning in Gateway.... The CM is an odd zone that came into being because of areas such as Hawthorne-there was a desire to try out a mixed-commercial zone. You actually have to put 50% residential in this zone-the only zone that has a required amount of residential. Then it goes up to CX, a high density commercial zone. One of the things that people don’t like is the strip commercial zone of CG and we don’t have much in Gateway. In a lot of zones you can build out to the entire site and with CS it is required. CX is a high-density commercial zone and is used downtown. The other two downtown zones, RX and CX, are close together and this has people very concerned. 1, record 76, English, - RX%20zone

Lock-in is a fundamental physical phenomenon associated with all oscillating devices. Laser gyros exibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositley traveling beam. This is called backscatter and is caused primarily by imperfect mirrors. Therefore, at low rotation rates, there is no frequency difference between the counter-rotating beams so that the gyroscope does not indicate any rotation. In spite of the ring laser gyro's dead zone whith lock-in thresholds on the order of hundreds of degrees per hour, it is still feasible to obtain measurements of rotation rates of less than 1 deg/h. 1, record 79, English, - ring%20laser%20gyro%27s%20dead%20zone

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use.
