The subsumption band may represent a zone of deformed overriding(that is, non-subducting) plate alongside the subduction margin, although the exact location of the proposed subduction boundary at the subsumption band is unknown.

Quand deux plaques de glace entrent en collision sur Europe, satellite de Jupiter, l'une plonge sous l'autre, formant une zone de subduction. Mais, à la différence de ce qui se passe sur Terre, où il entraîne la création de montagnes, ce processus crée ici une zone de subsumption : la plaque qui plonge fond et se mélange à l'enveloppe intérieure de glace. Une bande de subsumption apparaît aussi : elle résulte de la contraction de la plaque supérieure lors de la collision.
