Following air/liquid separation the liquid phase is treated by a combination of oil/water separation, air stripping, and liquid phase carbon treatment before being discharged. The advantages of multi-phase extraction & treatment include : a high product to groundwater extraction ratio; aeration of the vadose zone which enhances natural biodegradation of the hydrocarbon contaminants; all treatment components may be housed in a turn-key mobile remedial unit; a simple product recovery technology which can be transferred to conventional remedial applications such as pump and treat, sparging and vapour extraction system(VES) applications. Air sparging is the process of injecting air directly into groundwater. Air sparging remediates groundwater by volatilizing contaminants and enhancing biodegradation. It is akin to blowing bubbles from a straw into a bowl of water. As the bubbles rise, the contaminants are removed from the groundwater by physical contact with the air(i. e., stripping) and are carried up into the unsaturated zone(i. e., soil). As the contaminants move into the soil, a soil vapor extraction system is usually used to remove vapors. 2, record 25, English, - air%20sparging

In wildlife reserves and national parks, equitable access and sustainable management of natural resources is administered by an innovative system of buffer zones. Buffer zones are bands of land surrounding the protected area and managed by user groups federated into user committees and then to management councils. Buffer zone residents receive a share of the protected area revenue and are permitted certain privileges such as harnessing natural resources, such as wood, fish, and traditional plants, on the condition that they not sell or market any of these resources. 1, record 26, English, - user%20committee

Serving as a means of aerial reconnaissance and surveillance rather like "an extended pair of binoculars", DRAC enables an operator to gather, display and process real-time images at a distance of up to 10 kilometres, by day or by night. One of the intended missions of the DRAC system is to immediately detect all presence or advancing infantry units or vehicles at a particular location or within a specific corridor in the command zone of the reconnaissance units, without having to deploy any ground sensors. Each system consists of two fixed-wing aerial vehicles from the Tracker series, interchangeable gyro-stabilised visible-spectrum and infrared payloads, a data link and a portable, multifunction, ruggedised ground station. The latter in turn comprises two sets of functions : for mission preparation and control and for payload operation respectively. The complete equipment is packed in a rucksack that can be easily transported and deployed by two men. This feature makes DRAC particularly suitable for use by paratroopers. The responsibility for developing and manufacturing the DRAC systems has been conferred on EADS, as overall prime contractor, working in partnership with SurveyCopter. 2, record 35, English, - DRAC%20system

The first type of precision airdrop is a single system called AGAS(Affordable Guided Airdrop System) that uses in-service round cargo parachutes. A detailed knowledge of the wind patterns at the drop location is used to calculate the required flight path and drop point. The flight path is maintained by the system's ability to pull slips which dump air from one side of the canopy. By incorporating wind data with this limited method of steering, the system has proven capable of landing an average of 48 meters away from the intended grid reference when deployed from 13 000 ft above ground level. This accuracy is phenomenal given that the present LF freefall cylinder rarely even hits a large drop zone when deployed from 5, 000 feet above ground evel(AGL). AGAS is the cheapest precision airdrop system presently available. 2, record 39, English, - affordable%20guided%20airdrop%20system

1, record 39, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20peu%20co%C3%BBteux%20de%20largage%20de%20pr%C3%A9cision

A PAPR, powered air purifying respirator, is a positive air system that uses a battery to power a blower, which then pumps air through a filter into a mask or a hood. The blower, battery and filters are usually belt-worn, and connected to the hood or mask by a breathing tube. The clean, filtered, cool air flows into the breathing zone. The airflow is much higher than the wearer needs to breathe, and the excess flow creates a positive pressure as it passes through the mask. This pressure pushes out, and keeps contamination from leaking in. This is different from a normal gas mask, which uses the wearer's lung power to pull air through a filter. Une fois que la communication entre les puits est établie, on injecte de la vapeur d'eau de façon continue, et l'injection et la production sont pratiquées de manière à provoquer alternativement une mise en pression et une décompression du bitume dans le réservoir. 1, record 49, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20de%20d%C3%A9placement%20par%20la%20vapeur%20d%27eau

Town-Country Symbiosis in Calcutta. Historically, the city's eastward expansion halted west of a marginal zone of low lying marshlands, variously known as Dhapa, East Calcutta, or the area of the salt water lakes. Here a symbiotic, creative relationship exists between town and country. With the participation of the rural inhabitants, much of the solid trash, liquid sewage, and polluted air generated by the metropolis of over ten million inhabitants is recycled into organic nutrients, fresh water, and clean air. The system reduces urban waste, creates a daily supply of fresh fish and green vegetables for Calcutta's kitchens, and generates employment and revenue for East Calcutta's thirty-odd villages. 1, record 55, English, - town%2Dcountry%20symbiosis

Subirrigation(seepage) systems are based on establishment and maintenance of the high water table just beneath the crop root zone. Due to the capillary action the water migrates upward providing necessary moisture for the crop. For this system to function, the top layer of soil must have high hydraulic conductivity typical for sand or muck. The existence of natural high water table or restrictive layer(clay, rock, etc.) below the root zone is necessary to allow for the buildup and regulation of the irrigation water table throughout the season. Raising the water table in addition to providing for the evapotranspirational demand of the crop, requires large quantities of water which must also be available for seepage irrigation. 6, record 58, English, - subsurface%20irrigation

Drip Irrigation.... Water is delivered in small quantities under low pressure directly to... the root zone of the plants. You’ll need 1/2 inch polyethylene header pipe, and a roll of thin tape-like porous tubing. The header pipe connects to a garden hose and routes water through the garden. The pipe is placed either down the center or along one end of the garden. Small puncture holes are then made with a screwdriver into the header pipe at intervals corresponding to garden row. Eight-to ten-inch pieces of rubber connecting hose are then inserted into these holes. The other end of the connecting hose attaches to a length of porous tape. This tape is rolled out along each vegetable bed and cut to the same length as the row. Then end of the tape is then crimped to prevent water loss when the system is in use. Porous irrigation tape is best placed about three to four inches away from the base of the plants. 1, record 61, English, - porous%20irrigation%20tape

Fabric Forms for Pile Jacketing.... All piles in a marine environment suffer deterioration at varying rates.... General Methods of Repair. The methods used for rehabilitation of piles are varied and constantly increasing in number.... In the 1960s a technique was developed that utilizes construction fabrics as a concrete-forming system. Basically this concept uses as a concrete from a jacket of woven nylon fabric, each end of which is connected by a heavy industrial zipper sewn onto the fabric. The ends of the fabric above and below the deterioriated pile zone are banded to the pile. These fabric forms have proven economic advantages over other concrete forming systems because of their light weight, ease of intallation, relatively low fabric cost, and ease of connection onto the piles at any location above the mudline. 3, record 69, English, - fabric%20form

Reactors. The most widely applied reactors for gasification of biomass are the moving bed types and the fluidized bed types.... Moving bed-counter current. The moving bed reactor is a vertical shaft through which the biomass flows slowly downwards as a packed bed. The reactor has a gastight feeding system at the top and an ash removal system at the bottom. The moving bed reactor is used for biomass having dimensions of 1 to 10 cm. Three sub-types can be distinguished : cocurrent, countercurrent and cross-current reactors. The countercurrent moving bed gasifier is the most simple reactor type. The gas, produced in the reduction zone, leaves the reactor together with the pyrolysis products and the steam from the drying zone. The producer gas is rich in hydrocarbons and it has a temperature of about 400°C. The gas can be used for direct heating purposes. If it is to be used for electricity generation by internal combustion engines, it has to be cleaned thoroughly. 2, record 86, English, - countercurrent%20moving%20bed%20reactor

3, record 92, French, - accumulation%20alluviale

The vibrating-grate stoker... is similar to the chain-grate stoker in that both are overfeed, mass-burning, continuous ash-discharge units. However, in the vibrating stoker, the sloping grate is supported on equally spaced vertical plates that oscillate back and forth in a rectilinear direction, causing the fuel to move from the hopper through an adjustable gate into the active combustion zone. Air is supplied to the stoker through laterally exposed areas beneath the stoker....
