A class of algorithms have been developed that operate via an iterative offspring production process. These iterative offspring production processes are commonly termed evolutionary algorithms, and include genetic algorithms, mutation algorithms, and the like. In a typical evolutionary algorithm, certain attributes, or genes, are assumed to be related to an ability to perform a given task, different combinations of genes resulting in different levels of effectiveness for performing that task. The evolutionary algorithm is particularly effective for problems wherein the relation between the combination of attributes and the effectiveness for performing the task does not have a closed-form solution.

The application of free-flying space robots(FFSR) has achieved significant progress because of their ability to perform on-orbit servicing missions autonomously or telerobotically instead of human performing hazardous, monotonous and costly extra vehicular activities(EVA). Some applications of FFSR include inspection, repairing, assembling, refueling and docking with other spacecraft. As these tasks are dangerous for astronauts to perform in the space environment, space robots are expected to be utilized and therefore, a high level of accuracy is required for a successful mission.

A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a mechanism used to measure extremely weak signals, such as subtle changes in the human body’s electromagnetic energy field.

Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition : each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits(that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing.

The MSS [Mobile Servicing System] consists of three main elements : the Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS), known as Canadarm2, the Mobile Base System(MBS), and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator(SPDM). Canadarm2 and the MBS, its platform, are essential tools for the assembly of the ISS.... The Space Station Remote Manipulator System(SSRMS), known as Canadarm2, is the first component of the Mobile Servicing System. Although similar to the Shuttle Canadarm, this 17-metre manipulator is somewhat larger and incorporates many advanced features, including the ability to self relocate. The arm has the capacity to handle large ISS modules and structural elements. It will initially be used to assemble the Station. In the future, it will capture and dock unmanned resupply spacecraft to the ISS and perform routine maintenance tasks. Canadarm2 will normally move along the Space Station on the Mobile Base System, but it also has the ability to "walk" from place to place by moving from one grapple fixture on the exterior of the structure to the next, like an inchworm.... It is equipped with four television cameras, two mounted on the booms and one near each tip. These cameras feed images to the astronauts operating the arm from the Robotic Workstation inside the Station. An advanced version of the Canadian Space Vision System improves the ability of Canadarm2 operators to keep track of the position, orientation and movement of payloads being grappled.
