English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineral Processing (Metallurgy)
  • Chemical Engineering
DEF

[A pneumatic flotation machine consisting] of a long trough in the bottom of which is a longitudinal cylindrical rotor, covered with a porous medium, revolving slowly at about 15 revolutions per minute. The rotor is mounted at each end on hollow shafts extending out of the cell at each end through packing glands or through specially designed gland eliminators. Low-pressure air is introduced through the shaft at either end, or, for better control of aeration in various parts of the cell, the rotor may be divided into two sections and air introduced at both ends. The rotor is fitted with two longitudinal angle-iron scraper bars, which prevent settling and accumulation below it and thus protect the mat. The pulp enters at one end and is subjected to thorough aeration in passing through the machine. Froth overflows the sides, and tailings are discharged at the end by means of an adjustable weir overflow.

Record 7 2008-07-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Surgical Instruments
CONT

A chest tube is a tube inserted into the chest cavity for removal of air or fluid, or both; it is needed when the normally airtight pleural space has been penetrated through surgery or trauma, when a defect in the alveoli allows air to enter the intrapleural space, or when there is an accumulation of fluid, as from pleural effusion. Excessive air or fluid in the pleural space can cause collapse of the lung and the danger of mediastinal shift.

CONT

A chest tube or chest drain is a flexible plastic tube that is inserted through the side of the chest into the pleural space. It is used to remove air (pneumothorax) or fluid (pleural effusion, blood, chyle), or pus (empyema) from the intrathoracic space.

CONT

Chest drain is a conduit to remove air or fluid from the pleural cavity. The fluid can be blood, pus or a pleural effusion . Allows re-expansion of the underlying lung. Must prevent entry of air or drained fluid back into the chest. A chest drain must therefore have three components: An unobstructed chest drain ; A collecting container below chest level ; A one-way mechanism such as water seal or Heimlich valve.

CONT

Chest drains incorporate the use of a one-way valve to drain fluid or air from the pleural cavity. The valve prevents back-flow of air and fluid into the pleural cavity. They are indicated for use when collections of fluid or air are present in the pleural space, and by draining the collection they restore efficient gaseous exchange.

CONT

Chest tubes are inserted to drain blood, fluid, or air and to allow the lungs to fully expand. The tube is placed between the ribs and into the space between the inner lining and the outer lining of the lung (pleural space).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments chirurgicaux
CONT

La pose et le retrait du drain thoracique sont des soins très douloureux et très traumatisants pour l'enfant, d'où l'intérêt d'une prise en charge optimale de la douleur.

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Biomass Energy
  • Biotechnology
DEF

Fermentation processes that require the presence of air.

OBS

During fermentation organic matter is decomposed in the absence of air(oxygen) ;hence, there is always an accumulation of reduction products, or incomplete oxidation products.... There are also many microbiological processes that go on in the presence of air while yielding incomplete oxidation products. Good examples are the formation of acetic acid(vinegar) from alcohol by vinegar bacteria, and of citric acid from sugar by certain molds....

CONT

[...] 2. La fermentation méthanique.

CONT

The return piping that carries the condensate accumulation back to the boiler and is installed below the level of the boiler water line is called a wet return. It is completely filled with water and does not carry air or steam. When the system is first filled with water or is cold, the pressure throughout the system is the same, or balances. Therefore, the water is at the same level in the boiler and drip connection as indicated by the boiler water line.
