The accumulator head method has replaced the ram accumulator in its applicability for heavy parts.... A tubular plunger quickly extrudes the melt from the head annulus with a low uniform pressure, which helps to reduce the stresses found in other systems.

Pour les grosses capacités, on utilise souvent des têtes accumulatrices. La matière fondue entre par deux courbes en forme de cœur se recouvrant à 180°; elle arrive dans une chambre d'accumulation pour donner une préforme homogène annulaire.

The accumulator head is considered a subcategory of intermittent extrusion blow molding. It is the combination of an extrusion head with a first in/first out tubular ram melt accumulator.

The extrusion head used in blow molding is one of three basic styles : the spider or axial flow head, the side feed or radial flow head, and the accumulator head.... The side feed or radial flow head is a design most often used for polyethylene. Melt enters the head from the side, divides around the mandrel, and rewelds. As the melt moves downward, it enters the pressure ring area, creating a tremendous back pressure that helps ensure the resin reweld. The head is used for its simplicity and ruggedness, but has the disadvantage of relatively long color changes.

CONT

The extrusion head used in blow molding is one of three basic styles : the spider or axial flow head, the side feed or radial flow head, and the accumulator head. In the simplest form of the spider or axial flow head, a central torpedo is positioned in the melt flow path supported generally by two spider legs. The smooth and direct path with little or no place for material to hang up and degrade makes this head ideal for PVC resin. Cross-sectional areas of the melt flow path from the extruder, over the torpedo, and over the spider legs are carefully balanced to ensure an even and consistent pressure and flow.

CONT

The [intermittent extrusion] process has three subcategories : the reciprocating screw method, the ram accumulator method, and the accumulator head method.... The accumulator head method has replaced the ram accumulator in its applicability for heavy parts. The reservoir, tubular in shape, is a part of the extrusion head itself. Plastic melt that enters the head first is also first to leave. A tubular plunger quickly extrudes the melt from the head annulus with a low uniform pressure, which helps to reduce the stresses found in other systems.

The [intermittent extrusion] process has three subcategories : the reciprocating screw method, the ram accumulator method, and the accumulator head method. The reciprocating screw method is normally used for bottles between 250 mL and 10 L in volume. After the parison is extruded, the screw moves backward, accumulating melt in front of its tip. When the previously molded bottle has cooled the mold opens, the bottle is removed and the screw quickly moves forward, pushing plastic melt through the extrusion head and thereby forming the next parison.

CONT

The [intermittent extrusion] process has three subcategories : the reciprocating screw method, the ram accumulator method, and the accumulator head method.... The ram accumulator method, which is no longer in widespread use, is intended for heavy parts weighing 2 kg or more. Much like the reciprocating screw, the system is used to quickly extrude heavy parisons that might sag or draw down from gravity. The accumulator is a reservoir mounted alongside the extruder. A piston or plunger pushes the melt through the extrusion head. Unlike the reciprocating screw, melt that enters the reservoir first is the last to leave.

Effective use of the KFF's accumulator head permits the harvesting of small-timber stands, which may be high on fibre but uneconomical to harvest by conventional methods(E. Heidersdorf, The Koehring Feller-Forwarder : Longer-Term Data Collection from two Hardwood Operations, June 1978, p. 11).
