A natural resinous exudation(mixture of a volatile oil and a resin) from plants which may be obtained by making incisions in the bark or wood of the secreting plants, or an aromatic liquid preparation(mixture of an oil and a resin or other active substance) artificially obtained by an extraction using solvents(alcohol, ether or acetone).

Although the oleoresin is very similar to the spice from which it is derived, it is not identical because not all substances in the spice are extracted ... Certain spices are extracted as oleoresins for color rather than for flavor.

Balsam of Tolu was included in the US Pharmacopeia in 1820 as well and used similarly in addition to an antitussive and respiratory used for lozenges for coughs and sore throats, in cough syrups and as a vapor inhalant for respiratory ailments with documented antiseptic and expectorant properties.

Tolu balsam... constituents : About 80 per cent amorphous resin, with cinnamic acid, a volatile oil, and a little vanillin, benzyl benzoate and benzyl cinnamate. It is freely soluble in chloroform, glacial acetic acid, acetone, ether, alcohol and liquor potassa, scarcely soluble in petroleum-benzine and benzol.

Le baume de Tolu est souvent confondu (à tort) avec le baume du Pérou.
