The UCI Road World Championships, often referred to as the World Cycling Championships, is the annual world championship for bicycle road racing organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale(UCI). The UCI Road World Championships include championships for elite men's road race and individual time trail. In addition, U-23 world championship events are held for the same events in the same manner for cyclists under the age of 23 years old. The winner of the UCI Road World Championships Road Race is considered the World Cycling Champion(or World Road Cycling Champion) and earns the right to wear the Rainbow Jersey for a full year in road race or stage events. The event is a single "massed start’ road race, the winner being the first across the line at the completion of the full race distance. The winner of the UCI Road World Championships Time Trial is considered the World Time Trial Champion and earns the right to wear the Rainbow Jersey for a full year in individual time trial(ITT) events or stages(for example, the prologue and ITT stages at the Tour de France or other stage races).

Les Championnats du monde de cyclisme sur route se déroulent sur une course unique, généralement en fin de saison cycliste, tous les ans depuis 1927 pour les hommes, et depuis 1958 pour les femmes. Ces compétitions sont organisées sous l'égide de l'Union cycliste internationale, le pays organisateur changeant tous les ans. Les épreuves se courent sur circuit, et exceptionnellement, par équipe nationale (les épreuves cyclistes se déroulant le reste de l'année par équipes de marque). Les vainqueurs des épreuves obtiennent le droit de porter le maillot arc-en-ciel dans l'année quit suit. Depuis 1994, une course contre la montre donne également droit à un titre de champion du monde.

(1) Trainer & Associated Funds = 10% (of gross prize money, less entry fee, less SEBS; (2) Jockey & Associated Funds = 10%; (3) Stable Employee Bonus Scheme = 3% (of gross prize money); (4) Jockey Emergency Fund = 0.75% of gross prize money (net of entry fee).

In 1963, there were pari-mutuel meets at 29 tracks in total across the province offering 3, 292 races for gross prize money of $1, 842, 103, to just over one million fans.
