Airfoil blade fans ... are the most efficient of all centrifugal fans. These fans are most applicable to large systems where the energy saving owing to their high efficiency offsets their relatively high cost. The blades, which usually number ten to sixteen on the impeller, are contoured to react like an airplane wing. Airfoil fans produce extremely smooth flows and, for a given use, are the highest speed centrifugal fans. These fans have stable operation and low noise level over their full range. Airfoil blades are expensive to produce and repair, limiting their use to clean, nonabrasive gases. The construction of the scroll, the close internal clearances, and the precise alignment of the impeller and inlet bell are features which aid in attaining the high efficiencies of these fans.

CONT

CONT

Centrifugal fans are enclosed in a scroll-shaped housing ... Impeller blades may be radial, forward-curved, backward-inclined, or airfoil. When large volumes of air are moved, airfoil or backward-inclined blades are preferable because of higher efficiencies.

BERP blades. [a]... new design composite rotor blades, developed by Westland Helicopters Ltd in the UK... produce 30 per cent more lift and could give 45 km more forward speed than conventional blades of the same size. This design, with its characteristic "paddle" tip... features an all-composite blade using various cambered aerofoil sections along its length, culminating in thin, high-speed sections in the swept, extended-chord tip.

The X-wing has emerged from the circulation controlled rotor(CCR) in which a hollow blade of roughly oval aerofoil section, that is, without a real lifting profile at all, can be made to lift effectively by blowing a layer of air through a slot and across the curved Coanda surface which forms the trailing-edge. While this in itself produces lift, the air jet can be so modulated as the rotor turns that it has the same effect as the cyclic pitch changing of the normal rotor. Finally, a further jet can be blown through a second slot near the leading-edge of the blade so that it restores the lost lift of the retreating blade. This fore-and-aft blowing is the key to the stopped-rotor X-wing.
