IPALAC is an outgrowth of an approach used by BGU's Institute for Agriculture & Applied Biology in the development of Israel' s Negev desert. Since its establishment(in 1956), this Institute has introduced thousands of plant species and evaluated their potential for filling a niche in the Israeli context-either as crops or as elements of environmental enhancement activities(landscaping and afforestation). Some years back a group of researchers at the Institute concluded that the approach used so successfully in the Negev could be applied in the global battle against desertification, and their working paper on the subject was adopted by UNESCO in November 1994.
