AITKEN COUNTER [3 records]

Record 1 2000-02-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Pollutants
DEF

Microscopic atmospheric particle(diameter less than about 4 X 10-4 mm) which acts as a condensation nucleus in the operation of the Aitken dust counter.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Agents de pollution
DEF

Record 2 1991-06-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Pollutants
  • Climatology
DEF

An instrument developed by John Aitken for determining the dust content of the atmosphere. In operation, a sample of air is mixed, in an expandable chamber, with a larger volume of dust-free air containing water vapor. Upon a sudden expansion, the chamber cools adiabatically below its dewpoint, and droplets form with the dust particles as nuclei (Aitken nuclei). A portion of these droplets settle on a ruled plate in the instrument and are counted with the aid of a microscope.

OBS

Record 3 1991-02-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
CONT

A condensation nucleus counter... gives the concentration of Aitken particles in the air. Aitken particles are defined as particles in the diameter range 0. 005-0. 5 [micrometers]. This size range contains more than 99 percent of the total number of atmospheric particles. There is a well-known statistical scatter of CNC concentrations....

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
CONT
