An organic monobasic acid... derived from the saturated series of aliphatic hydrocarbons.

CONT

Acids with a larger number of carbon atoms such as palmitic (C15H32COOH) and stearic (C17H5COOH), are acids that may be derived from fats and oils. Hence this entire group of carboxylic acids is called the fatty acids.

OBS

Linoleic, linolenic, and arachidonic acids are called essential fatty acids by biochemists because such acids are necessary nutrients that are not synthesized in the animal body. Use: special soaps, heavy-metal soap, lubricants, paints and lacquers (drying oils), candles, salad oil, shortening, synthetic detergents, cosmetics, emulsifiers.

Certains troubles pathologiques résultent d'une déficience en un système enzymatique donné. Or, l'administration répétée d'enzymes dans un organisme animal ou humain se heurte à des difficultés de deux ordres : destruction par les protéases et réactions immunologiques antigènes-anticorps, qui font chuter rapidement l'activité de l'enzyme. L'inclusion dans des microcapsules, en isolant le biocatalyseur du milieu environnant, permet de prolonger son action. Une telle méthode a été testée dans le traitement du lymphosarcome induit chez la souris. Les cellules cancéreuses, incapables de synthétiser l'asparagine doivent trouver cet acide aminé nécessaire à leur croissance, dans leur environnement. L'injection intrapéritonéale de microcapsules renfermant une asparaginase, freine le développement de la tumeur en réduisant la quantité d'asparagine disponible.

The separation of e.g., biomass oils or coal fluids through the use of a solvent sequence followed by an analysis by chromatography.

CONT

Farcasiu had already developed SESC (sequential elution by solvents-chromatography) for separating coal fluids into distinct chemical classes. The method seemed even better suited for the separation of biomass oils which, unlike coal products, have no nitrogenous fraction to deal with....

OBS

The original SESC technique required only slight modification for the purpose at hand. Since wood oil is virtually devoid of aliphatic hydrocarbons, the first step, elution with hexane, was omitted. Whatever amount of this fraction, F1, does exist is eluted along with the aromatic hydrocarbons by 15% benzene-hexane in the present technique. This hydrocarbon fraction is designated F1, 2. Also, we have found acetic acid to be superior to pyridine for removing the last wood oil residues from the column.
