ALTITUDE HYPOXIA [9 records]

Record 1 2007-12-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
DEF

To reduce the pressure of air or gas within a container, cabin, or other enclosed space.

CONT

One consequence of cabin pressurization is that the pressure inside the airplane might be 70 kPa (10 psi), while the pressure outside is only 15 kPa (2 psi). An otherwise-harmless pinhole under these pressure differences will generate a high-pitched squeal as the air leaks out at supersonic speeds. A hole a metre and a half (5 feet) across will depressurize a jetliner in a fraction of a second.

OBS

Cabin pressurization is the active pumping of air into an aircraft cabin to increase the air pressure within the cabin. It is required when an aircraft reaches high altitudes, because the natural atmospheric pressure is too low to allow people to absorb sufficient oxygen, leading to altitude sickness and ultimately hypoxia.

PHR

Depressurize the cabin.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Circuits des aéronefs
DEF

PHR

Dépressuriser la cabine.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Research Equipment
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
DEF

A chamber used during aerospace or high terrestrial altitude research or training to simulate the effects of high altitude on the human body, especially hypoxia(low oxygen) and hypobaria(low ambient air pressure).

OBS

The Hypobaric Facility has been used for diagnostic assessments of medically-restricted aircrew, including doppler monitoring of CF [Canadian Forces] aircrew to assess susceptibility to altitude-induced decompression illness.

  • Mesures et analyse (Sciences)
DEF

Record 3 2007-07-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

The interior of all the research modules, like the ISS [International Space Station] interior as a whole, will be a "shirt-sleeve" environment, with an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere and temperature and humidity conditions similar to Earth-bound laboratories.

CONT

A "shirt sleeve" environment must utilize a breathing mixture which is fire safe and provides hypoxia and DCS [Decompression Sickness] protection. Argon is an inert gas with properties similar to nitrogen. It is relatively inexpensive and available. In terms of fire protection, a 38% oxygen and 62% argon mixture at 7. 34 psia will provide an equivalent burn rate of paper strips at sea level air. In terms of hypoxia prevention, this mixture, at this pressure, is the equivalent of breathing air at an altitude of 2, 728 feet.

OBS

shirt-sleeve environment: term officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

Record 4 2006-01-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
DEF

A type of high altitude [sickness] caused by exposure to altitude high enough to cause hypoxia, occurring as a result of decreased atmospheric pressure with consequent lowering of arterial oxygen content.

CONT

Mountain sickness is an illness that ranges from a mild headache and weariness to a life-threatening build-up of fluid in the lungs or brain at high altitudes. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the mildest and most common form.

OBS

It occurs as acute, subacute, and chronic forms. The subacute and chronic forms can be cured by descent to a lower altitude. Called also mountain disease.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Symptômes (Médecine)
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

The Pressurized Module (PM) is a facility where astronauts conduct experiments or control the total JEM [Japanese Experiment Module] facility. Inside the PM, the air composition and pressure are kept the same as on Earth, and temperature and humidity are controlled so as to be comfortable for astronauts’ activity all the time. Therefore, astronauts can work in the PM in a shirt-sleeve environment as we do on the ground.

OBS

In a "shirt sleeve" environment one must utilize a breathing mixture which is fire safe and provides hypoxia and DCS [Decompression Sickness] protection. Argon is an inert gas with properties similar to nitrogen. It is relatively inexpensive and available. In terms of fire protection, a 38% oxygen and 62% argon mixture at 7. 34 psia will provide an equivalent burn rate of paper strips as sea level air. A condition in which the partial pressure of oxygen in the pulmonary alveoli, blood and tissues is reduced as a result of exposure to low atmospheric pressure.

French

Record 7 1981-07-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
DEF

A condition of altered pH of blood and tissue fluids in the direction of alkalinity, produced by hypoxia at real or simulated altitude. The increase of pulmonary ventilation induced by the hypoxia depletes the carbon dioxide stores of the blood and tissues, leading to alkalosis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
DEF

DEF

A term used to describe a wide range of conditions which may arise as a consequence of exposure to altitude, actual or simulated, with correction of hypoxia. The syndrome or syndromes are characterised by neurological deficit and/or circulatory decompensation. This form of Decompression Sickness may arise during altitude exposure or after descent and is occasionally irreversible, culminating in death.

DEF
