ALI-80A Encoding Altimeter. The ALI-80A decodes the binary, self-clocking Manchester data transmitted by the central ADC [Air Data Computer], corrects for a value(in feet) equal to the baroset display and displays actual corrected altitude of the aircraft on the circular pointer/dial scale and numeric counter drum readout.

The height indicator is a servo-driven device that positions the pointer at an altitude proportional to the dc voltage analog from the receiver-transmitter having a scale factor of +5 millivolts per foot and a range of 0 to +25 volts corresponding to an altitude of 0 to 5000 feet.

Early sixteenth century instrument used for determining latitude by observations of Polaris. Had a base plate, graduated for time and date, on which was a disc graduated in arc. When inner disc was set to time and date the instrument was suspended vertically and a pointer, pivoted at centre of disc, was sighted on Polaris. Pointer then indicated altitude of Pole. Invented 1520.
