The Kerrison Predictor was one of the first fully automated anti-aircraft fire-control systems. The Predictor solved the problem by doing all of the calculations mechanically through a complex system of gears. Inputs to its calculations included wind speed, ballistics of the gun and the rounds it fired, angle to the target in azimuth and altitude, and a user-input estimated target speed. Some of these inputs were fed in by dials, which turned gearing inside the Predictor to calculate the range(from the change in angle and estimated speed) and direction of motion.

The localizer transmission, at very high frequency [VHF] frequencies (108 -122 Mhz), provides information to the aircraft as to whether it is flying to the left or right of the centre line of the runway it is approaching. The localizer receiver output is proportional to the angular deviation ... of the aircraft from the localizer beam centre line which in turn corresponds with the centre line of the runway.

The second type of precision airdrop is the Precision Guided Air Drop System(PGADS). Several different systems are in development. The idea behind PGADS is to use a ram-air canopy controlled by an electro-mechanical servo system. This flies a load into a specific location from a safe stand-off range vice just utilizing the safety of high altitude. Systems under development range in current weight capacity from 500 to 2000 pounds. The systems use various modes of operation. They can be controlled remotely from the ground or in the air, programmed to home in on a beacon or programmed to fly to a pre-determined gird reference via GPS navigation.

The SEM subsystem consists of four instruments used for in situ measurements and monitoring of the near-earth(geostationary altitude) space environment and for observing the solar X-ray output. An energetic particles sensor(EPS) and high energy proton and alpha detector(HEPAD) monitor the incident flux density of protons, alpha particles, and electrons over an extensive range of energy levels. Solar output is monitored by an X-ray sensor(XRS) mounted on an X-ray positioning platform, fixed on the solar array yoke. Two redundant three-axis magnetometers, mounted on a deployed 3-meter boom, operate one at a time to monitor Earth's geomagnetic field strength in the vicinity of the spacecraft. The SEM instruments are capable of ground command-selectable, in-flight calibration for monitoring on-orbit performance and ensuring proper operation.

The Space Environment Monitor (SEM) measures in situ the effect of the Sun on the near-earth solar-terrestrial electromagnetic environment, providing real-time data to the Space Environment Services Center (SESC). The SESC, as the nation’s "space weather" service, receives, monitors, and interprets a wide variety of solar-terrestrial data, and issues reports, alerts and forecasts for special events such as solar flares or geomagnetic storms. This information is important to the operation of military and civilian radio wave and satellite communication and navigation systems, as well as electric power networks, and to the mission of geophysical explorers, Shuttle and Space Station astronauts, high-altitude aviators, and scientific researchers.

The U. S. SLCM [sea-launched cruise missile] under development is sized for launch from standard submarine torpedo tubes... The SLCM is to be developed in both strategic and tactical variants, the former being able to carry a nuclear warhead about 1500 nm. The latter will be designed to be launched from surface ships as well as submarines, primarily as a non-nuclear anti-ship missile with a range of up to several hundred miles. The SLCM will have a low cruise altitude flight profile and will have a high accuracy. The Soviet Union currently has SLCMs of a shorter range deployed on both nuclear-and diesel-powered submarines and surface ships.

For those platforms beyond the range of the navigation signals or with an impeded line of sight, the 1950s witnessed the development of a modern form of dead reckoning. A major regional community(biome) of vegetation in high mountainous regions and on high-level plateaus. The plants generally grow in thin stony soil and are subjected to high light intensity and high wind speeds. The climate differs from that of the tundra as there is daylight in winter and darkness in summer, more precipitation and wind, and a higher degree of solar radiation, but no permafrost. The number of plant species, although limited, is greater than that found in the tundra. Certain drought-tolerant species(e. g. grasses, sedges, mosses, and lichens) are common to both communities. In temperate latitudes there are many brightly coloured flowers in summer on the alpine pastures. The vegetation changes as the altitude increases due to the associated drop in temperature. The vegetation also differs between north-and south-facing slopes. The lower limit of the alpine zone(see tree line) varies in different mountain regions and also varies with the wetness of the locality and the mass of the mountain range.
