Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Satellite Telecommunications
DEF

A satellite that orbits the Earth from west to east at such a speed as to remain fixed over a given place on the Earth's equator at approximately 35, 900 km altitude[, and] makes one revolution in 24 hours, synchronous with the Earth's rotation.

Key term(s)
  • geo-stationary satellite
  • geo-stationary orbit satellite
  • satellite in geostationary orbit
  • satellite in geo-stationary orbit

DEF

CONT

Advanced Earth Observing Satellite(ADEOS) was the first international space platform dedicated to Earth environmental research developed and managed by the National Space Development Agency of Japan(NASDA)... ADEOS launched on August 17, 1996(at 01 : 53 UT) into a sun synchronous sub-recurrent orbit of an altitude of approximately 830 km by an H-II launch vehicle from the Tanegashima Space Center. ADEOS failed in June 1997 and was replaced on task by NASA's Earth Probe TOMS.

Subject field(s)
  • Launchers (Astronautics)
CONT

In a typical launch the booster motor puts the satellite in an elliptical orbit whose apogee lies at the correct synchronous altitude.

Domaine(s)
  • Lanceurs (Astronautique)
CONT

Pour placer un satellite [...] sur une orbite on utilise un lanceur comportant [...] plusieurs moteurs-fusées disposés en plusieurs étages; chaque étage imprime à l'engin une vitesse de plus en plus grande.

CONT

In addition to communications experiments, the Syncom satellites contributed to determination of the Earth's gravitational field. The Syncom range and range-rate system was capable of measuring range at synchronous altitude to an accuracy of less than 50 meters. The high altitude minimized perturbations by local topology changes on the surface of the Earth.
