A foehn cloud formation appearing as a bank of altostratus clouds east of the Rocky Mountains, heralding the approach of a chinook.

When moisture is present, a variety of mountain-wave clouds and lee-wave clouds can form, such as the chinook arch of the Canadian Rocky Mountains west of Calgary, Alberta. The chinook brings relief from the cold of winter, but its most important effect is to melt or sublimate snow: a foot of snow may disappear in a few hours.

Chinook arch: ... It forms in the rising portion of standing waves on the lee side of the mountains. An observer underneath or east of the cloud sees an arch of clear air between the cloud’s leading edge and the mountains below. The cloud appears to converge with the mountains to the north and south due to a perspective effect.

Thin altostratus usually evolves from the gradual thickening of a veil of cirrostratus. It nearly always appears as a layer of great horizontal extent. It is of a greyish or bluish colour, never white, and the greater part is always translucent enough to reveal the sun(or moon) as through ground glass.

Streaks or wisps of precipitation, such as water or ice particles, that fall from clouds but evaporate before reaching the ground.

Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds from which precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form in which the streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal evaporation decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under some conditions, virga are associated with dry microbursts, which are formed as a product of the evaporation.

They are actually altocumulus clouds from which precipitation is falling. Such trails of water droplets or ice particles are called virgae (or sometimes fallstreaks) and, by definition, do not reach the ground.

Cloud classification. A system... based on the system proposed by Luke Howard, a London pharmacist, in 1803. Howard divided clouds into three fundamental forms : stratus(sheet or layer clouds), cumulus(heaped-up clouds), and cirrus(fibrous or tufty clouds). The form nimbus was also added to indicate a rain cloud, but is now used only in composite forms, e. g. cumulonimbus.... Clouds are also classified into the height-based categories of low(up to 2 km), medium(2 km to 6 km), and high(above 6 km), with examples in each category being, respectively, cirrus, altocumulus, and stratus. The official International Classification scheme assigns a number to nine types of clouds. These are(ranging from high to low altitude types) :(0) cirrus,(1) cirrocumulus,(2) cirrostratus,(3) altocumulus,(4) altostratus,(5) nimbostratus,(6) stratocumulus,(7) stratus,(8) cumulus,(9) cumulonimbus.

La première tentative d'une classification des nuages est due au célèbre naturaliste français Lamarck en 1802. [...] L'année suivante (1803), un Anglais, Luke Howard, publia une classification des nuages qui, elle, connut un grand succès et cependant Howard, aboutissait, dans l'ensemble, aux mêmes résultats que Lamarck. Mais au lieu d'utiliser des noms français pour désigner ses formes types, Howard introduisait les noms latins de Cirrus, cumulus et Stratus.

On peut aussi classer les nuages par leur altitude, par leur mode de développement ou par la nature des particules qui les composent.
