A secondary closure made out of un-pleated aluminum foil that conforms to the primary closure and also frequently to the contours of a wine or alcohol bottle.

OBS

The expression "smooth aluminium foil capsule" can be found in the insert placed between pages 16 and 17 of PACKAGING, vol. XLVIII, no. 566, May 1977.

Although the terms "closure" and "cap" may be seen as different when standing alone, we think they should be recognized as synonyms when properly qualified.

Les capsules métalliques. On distingue cinq grandes catégories : - les capsules en plomb plaqué étain, les capsules en aluminium plissé, - les capsules en aluminium collé, - les capsules en feuille d'aluminium découpées sur machine [...] Capsules en aluminium collé. Plusieurs procédés de fabrication de capsules de surbouchage en aluminium collé ont fait leur apparition : 1. les capsules d'une seule pièce, la tête étant écrasée, 2. la capsule en deux pièces : la tête pourvue d'une pastille est collée à la jupe.

Surboucher une bouteille consiste à en coiffer le goulot d'une capsule préfabriquée ou découpée sur la machine suivant le cas. Bien entendu, le surbouchage, comme l'indique son nom, complète le bouchage, mais ne le remplace pas; il n'est effectué qu'après fermeture de la bouteille par un bouchon de liège, métallique, etc.

Intérieurement, la capsule est enduite d'un mélange d'adhésif facilitant la bonne tenue au verre.

At the point of use, the membrane is torn or peeled off, and subsequent reclosure is accomplished by the screw cap or snap-on lid that initially protected the membrane against mechanical damage. Such a membrane provides visual evidence of tampering.
