Subject field(s)

CONT

The plow anchor, as the name implies, is shaped like a farmer's plow, with a long shank ending in two curved flukes. They perform well in sand, gravel, rocks, and coral, but not so well in soft mud or clay, where their smaller surface area may not provide adequate resistance.

OBS

The most common plowshare anchors are the Bruce, the Delta, the Kobra, the Rock and the CQR (Coastal Quick Release or Clyde Quick Release).

Turnbuckles are used for adjusting tension in ropes, cables, tie rods and other tensioning systems, as well as for pulling together and pushing apart anchor points. Heavy duty rigging turnbuckles consist of two threaded bolts, each screwed into the ends of a metal frame. One side is left-hand threaded and the other is right-hand threaded, so riggers can turn the metal frame to push apart and pull together the threaded bolts. These threaded bolts come with a wide variety of end fittings and attachments including jaws, eyes, clevises, hooks and many more. All cable turnbuckles and turnbuckle hardware feature UNC [unified coarse] threads...

DEF

A special steel tubing welded or screwed together and lowered into a borehole to prevent [the] entry of loose rock, gas, or liquid into the borehole or to prevent loss of circulation liquid into porous, cavernous, or crevassed ground.

CONT

There may be several strings of casing in a well, one inside the other. The first casing put in a well is called surface pipe which is cemented into place and serves to shut out shallow water formations and also as a foundation or anchor for all subsequent drilling activity.

CONT

Drilling is started by attaching a short drill collar and a large bit to the kelly and drilling a hole to about 50 ft. A length of large size casing is run into this and cemented to the formation. This is called the conductor.

OBS

casing: term standardized by ISO.

OBS

DEF

Standing stances : in the standing position there are only two points of contact with the rock. With one foot well forward, the average belayer can hold 200 pounds from below, but less than half as much with a pull to the side or with the feet together. Belaying a leader from a standing position... is extremely weak if the pull is forward. It should be done only with a short tight rope to the anchor, which will take most of the force, or when standing just below the first protection so that you can not be pulled over.

Dextre [Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator] is designed so that only one arm can move at a time in order to avoid self-collision, achieve greater stability and maintain operational similarity with Canadarm2. The greater stability is provided by the immobile arm, which is first commanded to anchor Dextre to an ISS [International Space Station] stabilization point. At the tip of each arm, we find a "hand", known technically as the Orbital Replacement Unit/Tool Changeout Mechanism(OTCM). The OTCM consists of a set of parallel retractable jaws, which serve to grip payloads and tools. Each OTCM is also equipped with a retractable motorized socket wrench to mate and demate mechanisms on-orbit, as well as lights and a black and white camera. Dextre lower body is equipped with a pair of pan/tilt colour cameras that allow astronauts aboard the ISS, and engineers on the ground, to monitor the task, which is out of direct eyesight.

CONT

OBS

Calibrated chain is required for use with anchor windlasses. There are many different calibrations of chain around the world, all different in size. It is critical that the chain selected is properly matched to the gipsy of the windlass. Our short link calibrated chain fits Simpson Lawrence gipsies as well as others. Made of low carbon content mild steel, it is electrically welded for high strength and then hot dip galvanised to minimise corrosion. Calibration ensures even pitch and also pre-stresses the chain to beyond normal service loads.

DEF

A tubular, perforated device that is attached to the bottom of a sucker-rod pump and serves to prevent failure of the pump (gas lock) because of gas entry into the pump.

OBS

The device works on the principle that gas is lighter than oil and rises. As well fluids enter the anchor, the gas breaks out of the fluid and exits the anchor through perforations near the top. The remaining fluids enter the pump through a mosquito bill(a tube within the anchor), which has an opening near the bottom of the anchor. In this way, all or most of the gas is given the opportunity to escape before the fluids enter the pump.
