In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 2, English, - after%20capstan

5, record 3, French, - mouillage%20emboss%C3%A9

Over this wedge is fitted a loose split sleeve of 1-1/2 in. external diameter. The anchorage is provided by the bolt being placed in the hole and the bolt is pulled downwards while the sleeve is held by the thrust tube. Solid tires. Introduced in 1881 on the wheels of hansom cabs in London and formerly used for many types of road vehicles, solid tires disappeared from highways, mostly because of legislation that discouraged their use because they were hard on roads. Large sizes were supplanted by large pneumatic tires(truck and bus casings), but small solid tires came to be used extensively on industrial trucks and tractors. Some of these are made with metal base bands to which the rubber(and in some cases, rubbery polyurethane compositions) is firmly attached. These bands are the full width of the base of the tire and are often dovetailed to secure firm anchorage of a hard-rubber constituting the main portion of the tire. 1, record 58, English, - solid%20tire

Lighterage clause. It is essential to insert the so-called "lighterage clause" in charter-parties which show as port of discharge : any safe port in a certain range, e. g. Havre-Hamburg range. Such a clause may read as follows :"Should steamer be ordered to discharge at a place where there is not sufficient water to enter the first tide after arrival, without lightening, and be always afloat, laydays to count from twenty-four hours after arrival at a safe anchorage for similar vessels bound for such place, and any lighterage incurred to enable her to reach the place of discharge is to be at the expense and risk of the receivers of cargo... 1, record 76, English, - lighterage%20clause
Record number: 76, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In this clause, "lighterage" is given the restrictive meaning of "lightening" (to put cargo in lighters in order to lighten the ship, to reduce its draft), instead of its original meaning (loading and/or unloading of cargo by means of lighters but for shipping purposes). Although to change thus the original meaning of lighterage is, strictly speaking, a misuse, the wording of the clause thus called sufficiently specifies its meaning to avoid any misunderstanding. Writers of charter parties and transport documents have universally adopted "lighterage" as a synonym of "lightening" for the corresponding clauses: consequently, in the particular context of clauses incorporated to the above mentioned documents, its usage is to be considered correct. 2, record 76, English, - lighterage%20clause
