DEF

[A] device intended to be used to make measurements, alone or in conjunction with supplementary device(s).

OBS

1. The measuring instrument can either indicate directly the value of the quantity measured :"direct reading instrument"(e. g. ammeter, aneroid manometer...), or indicate only that the value of the quantity measured is equal to a known value of the same quantity :"comparison instrument"(e. g. equal-arm balance, null-detecting galvanometer...), or permit the measurement of a small difference between the value of the quantity measured and a known value of the same quantity :"differential instrument"(e. g. optical indicator of a length comparator...). 2. Most measuring instruments comprise a measuring sequence in which the quantity measured is transformed into a quantity perceptible to an observer(a length, angle...). 3. Measuring instruments can include elements serving additional or accessory functions(e. g. automatic regulation, signalling...). 4. Measuring instruments intended to measure certain defined quantities are given special names instead of the general title "measuring instruments"...

OBS

measuring instrument ("active") and material measure ("passive" measuring instrument): The general classification of measuring instruments ... is difficult to translate unambiguously since, although the French term "instrument de mesurage" corresponds exactly to the English term "measuring instrument," there is no English term corresponding to the French term "appareil mesureur" which is apparently confined to instruments incorporating transducers. The term "material measure" is acceptable in English ..., when there is particular need to avoid ambiguity in referring to a device of the "passive" type [and] the word "active" has been added in brackets, for clarification, to the term "measuring instrument."

OBS

measuring instrument: term and definition approved by AFNOR, ISO, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), and others.

OBS

measuring instrument: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

DEF

An instrument for measuring arterial blood pressure.

OBS

The two types of sphygmomanometers are a mercury column and a gauge with a dial face. The sphygmomanometer in most frequent use today consists of a gauge attached to a rubber cuff which is wrapped around the upper arm and is inflated to constrict the arteries.

OBS

Currently, there are three major configurations of blood pressure monitors for home use : the mercury sphygmomanometer, the aneroid manometer, and semiautomatic manual-inflation or automatic-inflation digital devices.

OBS

According to some sources, the terms "sphygmanometer", "sphygmometer" and "hemomanometer" are synonyms. In fact, these are three different instruments: a sphygmanometer measures arterial blood pressure; a sphygmometer or sphygmograph measures the strength and frequency of the pulse beat; an hemomanometer or hemodynamometer is an instrument by which the pressure of the blood in the arteries, or veins, is measured by the height to which it will raise a column of mercury.

DEF

DEF

A portable, handheld blood pressure measurement unit consisting of a cuff that is easily applied with one hand, a built-in or attachable stethoscope, a valve that inflates and deflates the cuff automatically, and an easy-to-read data display screen.

OBS

Currently, there are three major configurations of blood pressure monitors for home use : the mercury sphygmomanometer, the aneroid manometer, and semiautomatic manual-inflation or automatic-inflation digital devices.... The second most common type of blood pressure device is the aneroid manometer, developed in 1897. This type of meter is made up of a numbered dial and manually inflated cuff.

OBS

CONT

A mercury sphygmomanometer is operated by inflating a rubber cuff placed around a patient’s arm until blood flow stops. The cuff pressure is measured via the mercury column.

OBS

Currently, there are three major configurations of blood pressure monitors for home use : the mercury sphygmomanometer, the aneroid manometer, and semiautomatic manual-inflation or automatic-inflation digital devices.

OBS

Blood pressure measurement by sphygmomanometer is normally performed using a mercury manometer. This can consist of a U- tube half-filled with mercury, but more commonly it is a single tube, held vertical in use, which sits in a small reservoir of mercury. The reservoir is connected by a rubber tube to the source of air pressure to be measured. As pressure is applied mercury is forced up the column and the pressure can be read from a scale behind. The actual pressure is indicated by the difference in the level of the mercury in the column and the reservoir.

OBS

The mercury manometer is in fact only a part of the device called "mercury tensiometer". Mercury manometers are used in numerous fields. For example, the negative pressure within a dairy’s milking system is controlled by a mercury manometer.
