A flexible element either with flange end or butt weld end to absorb any combination of three basic movements, i. e. axial movement, lateral deflection and angular rotation along the axis of the pipe line.

[Axial bellows], of the type shown on a wellhead ..., transmit high compressive or tensile forces to the anchors, which must in consequence be sufficiently robust to resist these forces. They provide a rather expensive means of compensation, and are therefore used only where space restrictions prohibit the use of any form of looping - e.g. within a power house building, or in a hot water transmission pipe where vertical looping ... cannot be adopted. Un gyroscope (mesureur d'angle) utilise fondamentalement la propriété caractéristique d'inertialité (fixité dans l'espace absolu), totale ou partielle, de certains phénomènes physiques. À la base, c'est une mémoire de direction géométrique et matérielle dans l'espace. Synchro torque receivers... are electrically identical to torque transmitters of the same size except for the addition of some form of damping. In some sizes of 400-Hz synchros, units are designated as torque receivers but may be used as either transmitters or receivers. Unlike the transmitter, the receiver has an electrical input to its stator and a mechanical output from its rotor. The synchro receiver's function is to convert the electrical data supplied to its stator from the transmitter, back to a mechanical angular position through the movement of its rotor. This function is accomplished when the rotor is connected to the same ac source as the transmitter and assumes a position determined by the interaction of its magnetic field with the magnetic field of the stator.

The output shaft of a servo motor does not rotate freely, but rather is commanded to move to a particular angular position. The electronic sensing and control circuitry--the servo feedback control loop--drives the motor to move the shaft to the commanded position. If the position is outside the range of movement of the shaft, or if the resisting torque on the shaft is too great, the motor will continue trying to attain the commanded position.
