The resolution of an optical imaging system – a microscope, telescope, or camera – can be limited by factors such as imperfections in the lenses or misalignment. However, there is a fundamental maximum to the resolution of any optical system which is due to diffraction. An optical system with the ability to produce images with angular resolution as good as the instrument's theoretical limit is said to be diffraction limited.

En optique ondulatoire, un système idéal imageant parfaitement un point objet n'est limité que par la diffraction, c'est-à-dire que seule la diffraction intervient et que les aberrations ne déforment pas le front d'onde.

Limite de diffraction – Les instruments optiques contiennent le plus souvent une chambre noire. La lumière passant par l'ouverture de la chambre noire subit une diffraction. Or la diffraction limite le pouvoir de résolution des instruments optiques : un objet ponctuel donne une image «floue», appelée tache de diffraction. Si deux détails d'un objet sont trop proches, les taches de diffraction se chevauchent et il devient impossible d'obtenir des images séparées de ces détails.

The interest of a ground based Slit Aperture Telescope(SAT) which operates with a long thin pupil has been underlined for applications in the field of high angular resolution observations by speckle-interferometric techniques. The SAT lies halfway between the Michelson stellar interferometer and the standard telescope with circular aperture. The authors present the principle of an image processing algorithm which could be used associated with a space-SAT for astronomical image reconstruction. A full coverage of the two dimensional Fourier plane of the astronomical object can be obtained by rotating the SAT around its optical axis. The method of image reconstruction is analogous to those used in computerized tomography and uses Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. The interest of the use of a rotating space-SAT among synthetic apertures is its capability of giving a reconstructed image of the astronomical object simultaneously in several light wavelengths, each colored image being comparable with the others for fruitful astrophysical applications.

En l'absence de turbulence atmosphérique, l'image focale fournie par un télescope à pupille fente est quasiment une projection unidimensionnelle de l'objet observé. Angular amplitudes and rates, and linear accelerations were measured with a six-axis-gyroscope. High-frequency vibrations were characterized with a triaxial accelerometer. Additional measurements from an onboard gyroscope with better resolution were used as a correlation factor between the two gyroscope systems. Fourier analysis of angular amplitudes and linear accelerations determined relevant frequencies for the system. Sources of error for the gyroscope system such as temperature drift and axes misalignment were identified and characterized.

Le terme «mésalignement» n'est pas encore répertorié dans les dictionnaires courants. Cependant nos recherches sur Internet nous démontrent que ce terme est largement utilisé notamment dans les domaines techniques et scientifiques. Son attestation au dictionnaire ne saurait tardé, d'autant plus que le terme est parfaitement conforme aux règles du français.

IBIS [Imager on Board the Integral Satellite] is an instrument for detailed gamma ray imaging on board of the INTEGRAL satellite, the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory. This satellite is dedicated to observe with high spectroscopic and angular resolution celestial gamma ray sources.... Two main instruments(Spectrometer SPI and Imager IBIS) and two monitors([Optical Monitoring Camera(OMC) ] and X-Ray) will observe in parallel celestial objects of all classes.

L'instrument IBIS à bord d'INTEGRAL [est] chargé de fournir des images précises du ciel dans un domaine d'énergie allant de 20 keV à 10 MeV. [Cet instrument] est l'héritier direct du télescope SIGMA. Sa conception est en effet très semblable, alliant un masque codé à un ensemble détecteur à base de caméras gamma, le tout étant protégé des rayonnements parasites par des blindages actifs et passifs. L'originalité d'IBIS (Imager on Board the Integral Satellite) réside surtout dans les performances de l'ensemble détecteur qui devrait permettre d'atteindre une sensibilité dix fois meilleure que celle de SIGMA. Pour couvrir un domaine d'énergie de près de 3 ordres de grandeur, il a fallu recourir à l'utilisation de deux caméras. La première, ISGRI (Integral Soft Gamma-Ray Imager), fonctionne à basse énergie (20 keV - 1 MeV). La seconde, PICsIT (PIxellated CsI Telescope), mesure les photons de plus haute énergie (150 keV - 10 MeV).

Planck is the third Medium-Sized Mission(M3) of ESA's Horizon 2000 Scientific Programme. It is designed to image the anisotropies of the Cosmic Background Radiation Field over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to several cosmological and astrophysical issues, such as testing theories of the early universe and the origin of cosmic structure.... After launch, Planck and FIRST will separate and will be placed in different orbits around the second Lagrangian point of the Earth-Sun System.
