The Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) deals with the satellite attitude in space. The satellite attitude varies depending on the configuration, and it is determined and controlled by mission fulfillment.

CONT

Attitude Determination and Control System. RADARSAT-2 is a 3-axis stabilised, zero-momentum satellite. Various sensors and actuators determine and maintain the spacecraft's orientation, and ensure that the spacecraft meets its performance requirements for precisely pointing the SAR Antenna in either left-or right-looking mode and for controlling the transition between these two modes.

In-orbit calibration requires having the knowledge to the requested accuracy of the following parameters at the time of radar sensing for a data take :Antenna Radiation Patterns [;] Antenna Pointing(i. e. the reference frame of the radiation pattern) [;] Absolute Gain(i. e. instrument and atmospheric effect) for absolute radiometry [;] Polarimetric characteristics(i. e. crosspolarisation and imbalance effects) [;] Variations of these parameters during the data taking [-] the short-term Instrument Stability Tracking. CONT

Many of the antennas on board communications spacecraft in geostationary orbit are fixed. Some applications for antennas require the ability to point at different areas. These antennas could be used to support a developing regional communication system after a natural disaster or to support a mobile activity. A new spacecraft antenna pointing mechanism concept is to be investigated. The mechanism could use actuators or similar devices which are configured as a "plunger" or a single axis rotary device. The aim of the project is to configure the pointing mechanism to ensure it is capable of pointing a one metre diameter antenna, with full earth coverage.

DEF

An electronic theodolite which determines the direction of a radio transmitter carried by a free balloon in the atmosphere.

CONT

RDF [radio direction finding] systems use a tracking device called a radio theodolite to measure the position of the balloon relative to the ground station. The radio theodolite, which resembles a small tracking radar system, measures the azimuth and elevation angles to the radiosonde relative to the ground station. The radio theodolite automatically follows the motion of the balloon by tracking the primary lobe of the radiosonde's transmitter, making adjustments to the tilt and pointing direction of the antenna as it follows the signal from the sonde.

The activation of the Station's Ku-Band antenna is on standby until procedures are put in place for a possible software patch to account for an apparent pointing error with the dish-shaped antenna. The Ku Band system is used to transmit television, voice and high-speed data to the ground. Normal communication is being managed through the S-Band audio system. Any required TV images, in the meantime, can be accommodated through the use of the laptop computer-based digital video system. Until that problem is corrected, transmission of experiment data from the Human Research Facility experiment rack in the Destiny laboratory is on hold.

The satellite's integral propulsion system uses monomethyl hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide bipropellant carried in four spherical titanium tanks. A single 490-newton(110-pound force) thruster is used for perigee augmentation and apogee burns, and thirteen 22-newton(5-pound force) thrusters are used for attitude control and stationkeeping maneuvers. Highly accurate antenna pointing control is provided by independent beacon tracking on each of the Ku-band reflector systems. The attitude control system uses an innovative combination of double-gimballed momentum wheels and magnetic field torquing, which minimizes the need for thruster use during normal on-station operations.
