Although dangerous problems require the line to be closed and repairs must be made before the track can be used again, more commonly a track inspector simply downgrades track by imposing a speed restriction that allows continued passage of trains without the need for immediate repair. A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a mechanism used to measure extremely weak signals, such as subtle changes in the human body’s electromagnetic energy field.

Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition: each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits (that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing.

As part of the Space Station Freedom Program (SSFP), NASA is developing the Space Station Information System (SSIS) to support the information processing and communications needs of the Space Station. One aspect of the MITRE technical support and the MITRE Sponsored Research activity is the development of a discrete event simulation model of the SSIS baseline architecture. The portions of the SSIS included in the model are the Space Station Manned Base, the SSIS space-to-ground link, and the Ground Distribution System. MITRE has designed the SSIS Protocol Performance Model as a tool to be used in evaluating the ability of the SSIS to meet performance requirements.

CETA is a cart that will move along the Mobile Transporter’s rail system and function as a mobile work platform enabling spacewalkers to transport themselves and any necessary equipment along the length of the truss. Installation of the S1 truss and CETA cart will require three spacewalks.
