Le programme Artemis de la NASA [l'Administration nationale de l'aéronautique et de l'espace], nouveau chapitre de l'histoire de l'exploration de la Lune, a pour objectif d'envoyer des êtres humains plus loin que jamais dans l'espace. Ce programme dirigé par la NASA mise sur une collaboration internationale, notamment de l'Agence spatiale européenne (ESA), de l'Agence spatiale canadienne (ASC), de l'Agence japonaise d'exploration aérospatiale et de plusieurs partenaires commerciaux. Il met en place l'expertise nécessaire à un retour durable sur la Lune.

The human landing system(HLS) is the mode of transportation that will take astronauts to the lunar surface as part of the Artemis program... Crews will board the HLS in lunar orbit and descend to the surface where they will collect samples, perform science experiments, and observe the lunar environment before returning to orbit in the HLS.
