The Awards and Recognition Program provides services to promote excellence through recognition by various awards and recognition events such as the annual Public Service Award of Excellence, the Outstanding Achievement Award and National Public Service Week. The ongoing plans and priorities include : planning, developing and coordinating various awards and recognition events; and assessing and developing awards and recognition policies/initiatives, as part of a recognition strategy for the Public Service.

In 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) launched the Global 500 Roll of Honour for Environmental Achievement. The award is a tribute to successes on the front lines of global environmental action. It is granted to individuals and organizations for outstanding achievements in the protection and improvement of the environment. It provides prestige and attracts worldwide public, media and political support. This attention and publicity has been well received and provides the impetus to spur others to action.

Established in 1959 by the Massey Foundation, The Massey Medal is awarded annually by the Society. Its purpose is to recognize outstanding personal achievement in the exploration, development or description of the geography of Canada. Eligibility is restricted to Canadian citizens, although in special circumstances, the Medal may be awarded to a non-Canadian, subject to agreement by the Massey Foundation. It is always awarded to an individual, never a group. The presentation of the Massey Medal is usually made at Rideau Hall by the Society's Patron, the Governor General, when His Excellency's schedule permits. In years when this is not possible, a special award ceremony is held elsewhere in Ottawa, with the President of the Society presiding.

The Silver Laurel Leaf(also known as the Silver Laurel) is the highest German award for sporting performance. It was created in 1950 by Federal President Heuss to reward outstanding achievement in the fields of sport, gymnastics and(following the ancient Greek Olympic tradition) the fine arts. In practice it is reserved nowadays for sportsmen and women and gymnasts. The Federal President awards the Silver Laurel Leaf on the recommendation of the German Sports Federation and with the approval of the Federal Minister of the Interior.
