AWS SYSTEM [3 records]

Record 1 2019-03-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Railroad Safety
  • Rail Traffic Control
CONT

Train drivers on most European lines are informed of approaching warnings and cautions through the use of an AWS(automatic warning system). As the train reaches a certain point on the track a non-contact inductor sends a signal which is detected in the driver's cab. An audible or visual alarm then activates to alert the driver who then needs to acknowledge the signal otherwise the brakes are applied.

OBS

on-board automatic warning system: term officially approved by the Rail Terminology Approval Committee.

  • Ocean Energy
DEF

A system that converts ocean wave energy into electric energy.

OBS

[The AWS system] consists of a hollow, pressurized steel structure, the upper part of which is initiated to heave motions by the periodic changing of hydrostatic pressure beneath a wave. Being submerged, the device is characterized by low visual and acoustic impact.

OBS

If a wave is above the floater, the volume is reduced by the water pressure, and if a wave trough is above the AWS, the air pressure inside the floater moves up because of the air pressure inside.

OBS

The Archimedes Wave Swing (AWS), was originally developed by Teamwork Technology BV (NL), the rights are now owned by AWS Ocean Energy LTD (UK).

The Next Generation Weather Radar system(NEXRAD) comprises approximately 160 Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler(WSR-88D) sites throughout the United States and selected overseas locations. This system is a joint effort of the United States Departments of Commerce(DOC), Defense(DOD), and Transportation(DOT). The controlling agencies are the National Weather Service(NWS), Air Weather Service(AWS) and Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), respectively. Level II data are the three meteorological base data quantities : reflectivity, mean radial velocity, and spectrum width. From these quantities, computer processing generates numerous meteorological analysis products known as Level III data. Level II data are recorded at all NWS and most AWS and FAA WSR-88D sites. Level III products are recorded at the 120 NWS sites. The data are sent to the National Climatic Data Center(NCDC) for archiving and dissemination.
