Ice screws... Push the ice screw into the ice while twisting the hanger by hand in a clockwise direction to get it started. Placing the ice screw at waist level allows you to push harder and turn the screw with less effort. Continue to turn the ice screw handle by hand until the hanger nearly contacts the ice surface. Chip away any fractured ice using your ice axe, then turn the ice screw handle the remainder of the way. Align the hanger so that it hangs downward—in the direction of pull.... When possible, choose an ice screw length that will not bottom out on rock underneath the ice. Turning your ice screw into rock will damage the teeth and can fracture the ice.

The tubular, hollow-core ice screw... minimizes fracturing of the ice because the displaced ice moves up into the core of the screw... it has four cutting teeth and a conical interior. The tip of the cone is the toothed end of the screw. As ice enters the cone it can expand. The core fills with ice chips that are easy to clean out by tapping the screw against a hammer of axe head.

When the angle of ice steepens, and more security than the cross-body technique(piolet ramasse) provides is desirable, the axe is planted in the anchor position(piolet ancre)... : with the outside hand just above the spike, the axe is swung so that the pick is anchored in the ice in front and above the climber's head with the shaft parallel to the slope. The inside hand reaches up and grasps the axe head in the self-arrest position. By pulling down on the anchored axe, the climber steps up to a new in-balance position. A gentle and constant outward pull must be kept on the shaft to set the teeth and keep the axe locked into the ice. The axe is removed by pushing the shaft toward the ice and lifting the pick up and out of the ice.

When the slope becomes too steep to descend facing outward, the climber faces sideways and descends diagonally.... Footwork changes from the duck walk(en canard) to the same flat-foot technique which was used to ascend diagonally. The axe is used in the anchor position(piolet ancre) : with the outside arm, the climber swings the axe out in front and plants the pick in the ice, then flat-foots diagonally down below the axe. The shaft rotates as the climber passes below it.

There are several front point configurations available on crampons. Double horizontal front points are the traditional style used for steep snow and ice climbing. Different manufacturers offer this type of crampon in a variety of point lengths. Double vertical front points are shaped like two miniature ice axe picks. They work very well on vertical water ice. Mono point crampons have one point that protrudes far out of the front and is backed up by two points that are shorter. The effect is a tripod arrangement which is good for a variety of conditions and works especially well for mixed climbing.

axe, cooper's. A thin flat T-shaped blade, 10-12 in measured along the cutting edge, without a poll, and ground on one side only. The tapered socket springs from the middle of the back of the blade; in some patterns it is an extension of the blade, bent over to form a triangular socket. The handle is offset.... This tool is used for listing staves, i. e. chopping off the "waney" irregular edges and trimming them; this is done with the stave held almost horizontal on the block. It is also used for rough-shaping the circular outline of the heads and for chopping away the bevel on the back of the heads before using the Heading Knife....

... a Side Axe with a long blade shaped like a bird's wing, with the eye or socket near the lower, wider end. There is virtually no poll, and the cutting edge is usually bevelled on one side only. The handle is often off-set to prevent damage to the knuckles when the tool is used as a Side Axe for edge-trimming boards and planks.

An axe with one face bevelled and the other flat, for hewing timber.

The Side Axe was one of the main tools of the medieval builder and is still in occasional use, e. g. on the water front, or for squaring-up round timbers in the wood for the saw pit or saw mill. One advantage of the Side Axe over the Saw is its ability to follow the angles or taper of the timber, thus avoiding waste and retaining full strength.

"Squaring axe" should not be confused with a particular type of axe also called "squaring axe" or "blocking axe". See the "Dictionary of Tools" by R. A. Salaman.

According to "Terminology of Forest Science, Technology Practice and Products(FOFOR), "broad axe" is used in Australia and in New Zealand.
