The T56 is a single shaft, modular design, turboprop engine with a 14-stage axial flow compressor driven by a four-stage turbine unit. The gearbox has two stages of gear reduction, features a propeller brake and is connected to the power section by a torquemeter assembly.

Les turbines axiales regroupent les Kaplan, les bulbes et les hélices. Ce sont toutes des turbines à réaction. Elles se rencontrent dans les aménagements à forts débits et faible chutes (de 2 à 30 m). De multiples possibilités d'installations existent en fonction de l'aménagement. Les configurations hélice sont rares en petite hydraulique, celle-ci nécessitant un débit quasi constant. On trouve par contre de multiples installations à pales de roue mobiles et distributeur fixe (simple réglage) ou pales de roue et distributeur mobiles (double réglage). Dans les deux cas, ces machines sont peu sensibles aux variations de débit. Leur niveau de rendement mécanique est de l'ordre de 92 % en petite hydraulique (pour autant que leur développement soit issu de travaux en laboratoires).

Les turbo-réacteurs utilisent des turbines axiales ainsi dénommées parce que, comme dans les compresseurs axiaux, l'écoulement de l'air s'effectue dans une direction parallèle à l'axe de la machine.

This is simply a proposal for an axial flow impulse turbine to which water/steam mixtures are admitted through expansion nozzles for impingement onto impulse blading.... The idea is not new, having already been tried at Pauzhetka in the USSR..., where it was shown that the power developed from the water/steam mixture from a test bore was virtually the same as that produced from the steam phase alone from the same well, but that the optimal rotational speed was nearly twice as high with steam as with the wet mixture.
