The clonal selection theory is based on the proposition that during development each lymphocyte becomes committed to react with a particular antigen before ever being exposed to it. A cell expresses this commitment in the form of surface receptor proteins that specifically fit the antigen. The binding of antigen to the receptors activates the cell, causing it both to multiply and mature. Thus a foreign antigen selectively stimulates those cells that bear complementary antigen-specific receptors and are thus already committed to respond to it. This is what makes immune responses antigen-specific. The term "clonal" in clonal selection derives from the postulate that the immune system is composed of millions of different families, or clones, of cells, each consisting of T or B lymphocytes descended from a common ancestor. Since each ancestral cell is already committed to make one particular antigen-specific receptor protein, all cells in a clone have the same antigen specificity. 1, record 3, English, - clonal%20selection

1, record 3, French, - s%C3%A9lection%20clonale

The development of influenza virus-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocyte precursors(CTLp) is diminished in H-2b mice that are homozygous(-/-) for disruption of the H-2IA b gene. Virus clearance was not obviously delayed when compared with the congenic H-2IAb(+/+) controls, and evidence of CTL activity was apparent for inflammatory cells recovered from the respiratory tract in both cases. However, the virus-specific CTLp that are normally present in the regional lymph nodes and in the infected lung were evidently being consumed at the peak of the host response to give the terminally differentiated CTL effectors. 1, record 8, English, - cytotoxic%20T%20lymphocyte%20precursor

A key feature of lymphocyte function is that, unlike other body cells, small lymphocytes recirculate from blood to lymph. Recirculation is likely to be of great functional importance in allowing memory cells to be disseminated from a site of antigen stimulation to other parts of the body. Lymphocytes migrate from blood into lymph nodes... In the spleen the lymphocytes migrate from the anastomosing capillaries... B and T cells exit the lymph nodes by the efferent lymphatics and enter the lymph to be returned to the blood and continue to cycle. 1, record 9, English, - recirculation

1, record 9, French, - recirculation
