Light detection and ranging(lidar) is a technique in which a beam of light is used to make range-resolved remote measurements. A lidar [instrument] emits a beam of light, that interacts with the medium or object under study. Some of this light is scattered back toward the lidar. The backscattered light captured by the lidar's receiver is used to determine some property or properties of the medium in which the beam propagated or the object that caused the scattering. The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. The wavelength or wavelengths of the light used by a lidar depend on the type of measurements being made and may be anywhere from the infrared through the visible and into the ultraviolet. The different wavelengths used by radar and lidar lead to the very different forms that the actual instruments take. The major scientific use of lidar is for measuring properties of the earth's atmosphere, and the major commercial use of lidar is in aerial surveying and bathymetry(water depth measurement). Lidar is also used extensively in ocean research and has several military applications, including chemical and biological agent detection. Lidar can also be used to locate, identify, and measure the speed of vehicles. Hunters and golfers use lidar-equipped binoculars for range finding. 6, record 14, English, - light%20detection%20and%20ranging

4, record 17, French, - polarisation
Record number: 17, Textual support number: 3 CONT

A portion of the sunlight that reaches Earth is absorbed into the system, while some of the light is reflected by our planet back into space. Another innovation is the back-surface reflector(BSR). Even in photovoltaic devices operating at theoretical maximum efficiency, less than 40% of the light to which it is sensitive is absorbed by the cell and converted to electricity. The rest travels through unabsorbed and becomes a system loss. However, the BSR reflects this light back through the cell for a second pass, which greatly increases the conversion efficiency. Also, the BSR reflects radiation to which the cell is not sensitive. This radiation is called out-of-band radiation, and cannot be converted to electricity with this given material bandgap. By reflecting the out-of-band radiation back through the cell, it passes back out the front to the heat source where it is recycled.(Essentially, it helps keep the heat source hot so less fuel is required.) 2, record 23, English, - back%20surface%20reflector

There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission.... The "backscatter method" eliminates the need for an access hole by allowing both the source and detector to remain on the surface. Radiation is directed beneath the surface, and some radiation is reflected, or "scattered" back to the gauge detector by the surface material. This method... is... insensitive to density variations beyond a depth of 2 to 3 inches. However, the backscatter method is quicker than the direct transmission, and is useful when measuring uniform material such as asphalt paving. 1, record 25, English, - backscatter%20method

Radiant frosts occur when large amounts of clear, dry air moves into an area and there is almost no cloud cover at night. During these times, the plants, soil, and other objects which are warmer than the very cold night sky will "radiate" their own heat back to space and become progressively colder. In fact, the plants cool(by radiating their heat) themselves to the point that they can cause their own damage. The plant tissues which are directly exposed to the sky become the coldest. These radiation losses can cause the buds, blossoms, twigs, leaves, etc. to become 1-2°C colder than the surrounding air which radiates very little of its heat.... The amount of heat lost to wind drift is often at least equal to radiative heat losses that are in the range of 10 to 30 watts per square meter(W/m2) or more. Consequently, the replacement heat must be greater than the sum of both radiative and advective heat losses during "successful" frost protection activities... 1, record 26, English, - radiative%20heat%20loss

1, record 26, French, - perte%20de%20chaleur%20par%20rayonnement

A special radioactivity log that has been developed for open-hole surveying that responds principally to variations in the specific gravity of the formations. It is a contact log(i. e., the instrument is held against the wall of the hole). The logging tool emits neutrons and then measures the secondary gamma radiation that is scattered back to the detector in the instrument. 2, record 28, English, - density%20log
