BACK SLOPE [13 records]

Record 1 2010-04-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

A slope on the land surface, roughly determined by and approximately conforming with the direction and the angle of dip of the underlying rocks ...

CONT

Most catastrophic rock slope failures have occurred where the dip angle of the failure plane is approximately equal or slightly less than the angle of shearing resistance, notably on sedimentary dip slopes ...

OBS

The term "back slope" is not always a synonym of "dip slope" and is used only where the angle of dip of the underlying rocks is somewhat divergent from the angle of the land surface.

The shovel shear test provides information about the location where the snow could fail in shear. It is best applied for identification of buried weak layers and does not usually produce useful results in layers close to the snow surface. Soft snow near the surface is better tested with the tilt board and the shear frame or an improvised version of this tilt test.

CONT

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Easy... Moderate... Hard...

CONT

The results of the shovel shear test were inconclusive. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

Shovel test: abbreviated form of "shovel shear test." Shovel test may also refer to the shovel tilt test or the shovel compression test.

OBS

Observers are cautioned that identification of the weak layers is the primary objective of the shovel shear test. The shovel shear test is not a stability test.

OBS

shovel shear test: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

[...] Méthode de Munter.

OBS

CONT

[Transceiver Search.] The grid search method. The traditional search pattern is a grid based on perpendicular lines crossing the points of maximum signal strength.

CONT

[Transceiver Search. ] The second method is the grid method. When you find a signal, traverse back and forth across the slope. Where you think the signal is strongest(or, better yet, midway between fade points), you simply make a perpendicular turn(90 degrees to the old direction) and follow this new line. If the signal fades, it's the wrong way, so turn around(180 degrees) and march in the other direction until you hear the strongest signal(remember to keep turning down the volume). Turn 90 degrees again and repeat the process over and over until you zero in on the buried beacon.

CONT

DEF

An extremely upright hoof with a very broken-forward pastern-hoof axis.

CONT

May be caused by flexor deformity. In extreme cases, the digit may be folded back, with the animal bearing weight on its dorsal surface. In congenital club feet, the slope of the heels is usually more upright than that of the toe.

OBS

Ranging from cases where a slight contracture of the tendons causes too much weight bearing on the toe, sometimes bearing only on the toe ("pied pinçard"), to cases where the horse walks on the front of the hoof wall ("pied bot").

DEF

Broken foot in which the foot axis ... is less upright than the pastern axis ...

CONT

Pic 2 shows a foot broken forward. This angle creates excessive jarring as there is less spring whereas pic 3 shows the foot broken back. This applies excessive tension on the tendons.

OBS

... the junction of the pastern axis and the foot axis forms a line that is broken (pointing) toward the back. The hoof appears sloping and the toe elongates.

OBS

When the slope of the dorsal hoof wall is shallower than that of the pastern, the axis is said to be broken back.

OBS

Although some studies have been done on a broken-back foot axis (hoof angle lower than the pastern angle), ... one cannot tell if the results are due to a "misalignment" or simply to a low angle.

OBS

CONT

Meso-scale wind flows play an important part in the dispersion of pollutants. These flows(horizontal dimension of 10s of kilometers) include :(i) land and sea or lake breezes[;](ii) urban heat-island circulation[;](iii) slope and valley winds. Such flows are most noticeable when skies are clear and when the macro-scale flows(horizontal dimensions of 100s to 1 000s of kilometers) are weak. Characteristically, these meso-scale features have 24-hour cycles(diurnal variations), so that the daily mean vector wind is small and thus, pollution is moved back and forth across the region without much dilution.
