Subject field(s)
  • String Instruments
CONT

Purfling is a thin, double strip of wood that is inlaid into the edge of the top and back of the instrument. This may appear to be ornamental but, in fact, it serves two purposes. Structurally, purfling acts as reinforcement for the edges of the instrument preventing any severe damage from occurring at the upper and lower plates, should the edge suffer a blow. Acoustically, the groove that is cut into the plates acts as an interruption to the vibrations that are traveling through the wood.

CONT

The first major process in rebuilding a piano is disassembly, starting with the cabinet, then the strings, tuning pins, and finally the heavy cast-iron plate.... In a vertical [piano], first remove the front panels, upper pillars, lid, music shelf, fallboard, nameboard strip, keyslip, keyblocks, action, and keys. If you have a piano tilter..., move the piano far enough from the wall to tip it on its back. Stand the tilter up, center it behind the piano, and push it snugly against the back of the piano with the prongs under the bottom. With one assistant positioned in front to make sure the bottom can’t kick forward, tip the piano and tilter back together. Once the entire weight of the piano is on the tilter, your assistant can stop pushing the bottom of the piano toward the tilter.

  • Urban Planning
CONT

[The Dictionary of American Regional English] notes a similar term "devil' s lane, "first appearing around 1872, meaning the unusable strip of land between two parallel fences, often the result of neighbors being unable to agree on a common fence. And another term, "devil' s footstep, "dates back to around 1860 and means "a spot of barren ground. "So it's not surprising that a strip of land next to the street, unusable by anyone, would be christened the "devil strip. "

OBS

According to The Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE), which pays close attention to such local lingo, "devil strip" is heard almost exclusively in Northeastern Ohio, up around Akron. DARE suggests that the term may arise from the strip’s legal status as a sort of "no man’s land" between public and private property.
