5, record 1, French, - pr%C3%A9visionniste%20avalanche

Fairbanks is home to snow capped mountains, rugged backcountry areas, fantastic scenery and miles upon miles of winter trails. With so much to offer, it is no wonder snowmobiling has become an important part of life for people in Fairbanks.... One of the reasons why sledding in Fairbanks is such an amazing experience is because of the local snowmobile club. Formed in the late ’80s by a group of residents, the Fairbanks Snow Travelers snowmobile club is a devoted organization of people who love the sport of snowmobiling. They currently have between 150 and 200 members who do an excellent job of promoting sledding in Fairbanks. 4, record 2, English, - snowmobiling

... recent cold temperatures combined with shallow snow is a dangerous mix, creating a weak snowpack that cannot hold much weight. [According to him] "slabby" snow is making the backcountry dangerous. Snow grains that have blown around and then stuck together are layered on top of a weaker layer of snow. This slabby layer, he said, gives a misleading feel that it is strong, but it can easily cave in on the weak layer beneath, causing an avalanche. 3, record 7, English, - slabby%20snow
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Check out how well the new snow is sticking to the layer below and whether or not the new snow is cohesive and slab-like before riding a slope. Slabby snow on top of a weak layer is a recipe for large triggered avalanches. 1, record 7, English, - slabby%20snow
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
When used, "slabby snow" is always related to direct sensation of the snow by the observer whether by skiing or travelling through it, or by tests. This may be as a result of wind action on the snow, but could equally be due to the effects of sun or temperature on new snow layers. 2, record 7, English, - slabby%20snow

2, record 7, French, - neige%20avec%20une%20certaine%20coh%C3%A9sion

Avalanche risk is the probability or chance of harm resulting from interactions between avalanche hazard and a specific element at risk. Avalanche risk is determined by the exposure of that element, and its vulnerability to the avalanche hazard. Exposure is about where, and for how long the element at risk is positioned in the terrain. For backcountry travel, the exposure component of risk is the single most important consideration for controlling risk. This is because a person is capable of having complete control over where and when they travel, and is therefore charged with absolute responsibility for his or her own risk. Even during periods of high avalanche hazard, a simple reduction in exposure will reduce the risk. 2, record 12, English, - avalanche%20risk

Vulnerability is a concept that expresses susceptibility to the impacts of avalanche hazard, and it must relate to a specific element at risk. An old growth tree and a person standing side by side will have very different vulnerabilities to the hazard; therefore, while the hazard may be the same, the risk to each of them will be different. The person may be susceptible to Size 2 avalanches, whereas the tree might be susceptible to only a Size 4 – thus, the person has a higher vulnerability and subsequently higher risk. 2, record 12, English, - avalanche%20risk

Avalanche hazard and avalanche danger are synonyms.... Avalanche hazard describes a source of potential harm, and is a function of the likelihood of triggering and the destructive size of the avalanche(s).... avalanche hazard is independent of any element at risk. The hazard can be high while nothing is at risk... What links and differentiates hazard and risk is a key third term, exposure. To illustrate, a hazard is of no consequence to a person who is not at all exposed to it. Backcountry avalanches, therefore, should not concern anyone who avoids traveling in the backcountry. Avalanche hazards in mountainous terrain are common, but they represent a risk only to people using such locations when a certain depth of snow exists, thus presenting exposure to risk(O’Gorman, 2003). 2, record 14, English, - avalanche%20hazard

Routefinding. Once in the backcountry, it's important to pick a route that avoids primary avalanche terrain if at all possible, as conditions may change from day to day or even hour to hour. When in doubt, pick a route that follows a ridge top or wide valley bottom if possible. Look for signs of previous avalanche activity such as vegetation cues, old fracture lines and debris piles and avoid them. Stay clear of likely slide paths and run out zones if at all possible. 4, record 15, English, - routefinding

Travelers in the backcountry usually make mental notes of the observed factors and draw immediate conclusions about snow stability. Snow safety operations, however, usually retain written records of the observations. The records are needed for future analysis, for application in forecasting models, and for communication with other operations and agencies.... Observations should be carried out accurately, reliably, and according to standards(when standards for data collection exist).... Every observation should be relevant to snow stability.... Cornice tests... they have been standard techniques among ski patrollers, helicopter ski guides and especially climbers for decades. Cornices are the bombs of the backcountry. Simply find a cornice which weighs significantly more than a person and knock it down the slope. A cornice the size of a refrigerator or a small car bouncing down a slope provides an excellent stability test. The smaller the cornice, the less effective the test. You can kick the cornice, shovel it or best of all, saw it with one of those new snow saws which mounts on the end of a ski pole. 1, record 47, English, - cornice%20test

1, record 48, French, - randonn%C3%A9e%20p%C3%A9destre%20%C3%A9cologique

The concept of recreational opportunity is based on a recognition that the value an area holds for visitors is based on a combination of physical, biological, sociological and administrative conditions(Clark and Stankey, 1979) : Four factors are important in determining the suitability of an area for backcountry recreation : access, visitor contact, site management, and resource impairment. 1, record 72, English, - concept%20of%20recreational%20opportunity

1, record 72, French, - concept%20des%20loisirs
