BACTERIAL DEGRADATION [7 records]

Record 1 2015-12-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

The alteration in the chemical structure of a substance, brought about by biological action, resulting in the loss of a specific property of that substance.

CONT

Primary degradation occurs when the molecule has been oxidized, or otherwise altered by bacterial action to such an extent that its characteristic properties are no longer evident or when it no longer responds to analytical procedures more or less specific for detecting the original surfactant.

CONT

In relation to surfactant biodegradability, it is important to distinguish between primary and ultimate biodegradation. For example, the loss of the ester sulphate groups from surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulphate or sodium dodecyltriethoxy sulphate would be a primary biodegradation step that would lead to an immediate loss of susfactant properties. ... For the most part, industry and water and sewage authorities have been content to ensure that new surfactant products do undergo reasonably rapid primary and ultimate biodegradation and a variety of laboratory tests have been developed specifically since the advent of synthetic surfactants.

CONT

DEF

One of a group of enzymes, endodeoxyribonucleases, found in bacterial, yeast, and mammalian tissues, that catalyze the degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA).

OBS

The enzymes are important in the repair of defective DNA, acting by catalyzing the hydrolytic cleavage of a continuous polynucleotide chain near a site of distortion.

DEF

DEF

OBS

Dornasa es un término abreviado para desoxirribonucleasa.

Subject field(s)
  • Sewers and Drainage
DEF

Covered pit with open-jointed lining in its bottom portions into which raw sewage is discharged, the liquid portion of the sewage being disposed of by seeping or leaching into the surrounding porous soil, and the solids or sludge being retained in the pit to undergo partial decomposition before occasional or intermittent removal.

CONT

... a cesspool is shaped like a tank, with perforations permitting the effluent to seep out into the soil, while the sewage and household solids remain to undergo bacterial degradation.

OBS

Cesspools may be either watertight or leaching.

OBS

The use of cesspools for disposal of sewage and their installation are acceptable in some localities, only if no health hazard will result from such installation or use and if approval is obtained before work is begun from the health department having jurisdiction.

OBS

cesspool; cesspit: We haven’t been able to clearly distinguish those two terms, considered as synonyms by some authors but as different concepts by others. The main distinction noted is that "cesspool" is described as a "pit or receptacle having porous walls ..." and "a perforated tank", whereas "cesspit" refers to "an underground pit with no set form" ...

OBS

cesspool; leaching cesspool; dry well: terms officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
DEF

... Chemicals resulting from partial decomposition or chemical breakdown of pesticides.

OBS

... degradation is the process of breakdown of large organic molecules into smaller ones until the material in question has been changed into inert material on the one hand and stabilized material on the other. The stabilized material is organic material that will not be further degraded or broken down by bacterial action.

OBS

degradation product: term used by Environment Canada.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie
CONT

DEF

aufwuchs [from German]: Aquatic organisms that are attached to but do not penetrate the substrate; e.g. crustaceans.

CONT

Microbial utilization includes anaerobic degradation of bottom sediments and bacterial degradation of organics in the water column by both attached and suspended organisms. For example, water hyacinth roots are substrate or media on which a large population of attached microorganisms grow.

OBS

Do not confuse with "fouling organisms" (which result from the presence of attached organisms) and "biotecton" (constituted by attached organisms).

CONT
