A vehicle equipped with a forklift consisting of two or more prongs which can be raised and lowered and are inserted under heavy materials or objects to hoist and move them.

Fork trucks... are either low-lift or high-lift self-loading trucks equipped with forks to handle loads on pallets, the elevating mechanism permitting multiple-tiering in the case of the high-lift models. The pallet is a load-carrier... designed to be picked up and carried on the forks. The load is supported on a cantilever principle, with the rear of the truck being heavily weighted to balance the overhanging load. The fork carriage is supported on two upright masts that may be either rigid or permit tilting backward and forward for easy handling.

Le principe mis en œuvre dans un chariot élévateur à fourches consiste à disposer la charge sur les bras d'une chaise susceptible de se déplacer verticalement le long de deux coulisses fixées sur des montants. Ces derniers sont solidaires, à leur partie inférieure, d'un châssis équerré muni de roues fixes et pivotantes ou orientables (chariot). L'équipement de base défini ci-dessus est complété par un appareil de levage. Les constructeurs s'efforcent de réaliser des modèles à grande hauteur de levée.
