BALANCE INDICATOR [6 records]

Record 1 2011-07-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
  • Meteorology
DEF

The line of lowest elevation or the lower limit of a snowfield at any locality on the earth’s surface above which snow accumulates and remains on the ground throughout the entire year.

CONT

Snowline... is the lowest limit of permanent snow on a mountain. During the cold season, snow will fall onto a mountain and build up. During warmer seasons, the snow may begin to melt. Where the melting is offset by the accumulation of snow, the snow remains all year round-and forms the snowline. The extent of the snowline can vary from year to year on a particular mountain, and is a good indicator of the balance between snowfall and snowmelt.

CONT

Snow line [is the] altitude above which or latitude beyond which snow does not melt in summer (usually called the permanent snow line), or, in winter, the line to which snow extends at a given point in time. Factors affecting the location of the snow line are the quantity of snowfall, the steepness of the slope on which snow rests, the exposure of an area to the sun and prevailing winds, the type and velocity of the winds, and the presence or absence of large bodies of water. The level of the snow line is much lower in winter than in summer. It is also affected by distance from the equator, along which it is found at an altitude of c.3 mi (5 km); in polar regions it is at sea level.

OBS

Snowline ... on glaciers it is identical to the firn line.

DEF

  • Measuring Instruments (Engineering)
DEF

[A] device intended to be used to make measurements, alone or in conjunction with supplementary device(s).

OBS

1. The measuring instrument can either indicate directly the value of the quantity measured :"direct reading instrument"(e. g. ammeter, aneroid manometer...), or indicate only that the value of the quantity measured is equal to a known value of the same quantity :"comparison instrument"(e. g. equal-arm balance, null-detecting galvanometer...), or permit the measurement of a small difference between the value of the quantity measured and a known value of the same quantity :"differential instrument"(e. g. optical indicator of a length comparator...). 2. Most measuring instruments comprise a measuring sequence in which the quantity measured is transformed into a quantity perceptible to an observer(a length, angle...). 3. Measuring instruments can include elements serving additional or accessory functions(e. g. automatic regulation, signalling...). 4. Measuring instruments intended to measure certain defined quantities are given special names instead of the general title "measuring instruments"...

OBS

measuring instrument ("active") and material measure ("passive" measuring instrument): The general classification of measuring instruments ... is difficult to translate unambiguously since, although the French term "instrument de mesurage" corresponds exactly to the English term "measuring instrument," there is no English term corresponding to the French term "appareil mesureur" which is apparently confined to instruments incorporating transducers. The term "material measure" is acceptable in English ..., when there is particular need to avoid ambiguity in referring to a device of the "passive" type [and] the word "active" has been added in brackets, for clarification, to the term "measuring instrument."

OBS

measuring instrument: term and definition approved by AFNOR, ISO, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), and others.

measuring instrument: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

DEF

CONT

... contrary to expectations, the current account balance does not receive much support as a useful indicator of crises. This may be because exchange rate changes may already reflect the behavior of the current account balance; in most of the studies where the effect of the current account balance was found to be insignificant, the real exchange rate did have a significant effect.
