S. nominal current account balance has been a source of disappointment and confusion to markets. To some extent, the lack of progress in nominal terms was expected, due to the so-called "J-curve" phenomenon, whereby the effect of a depreciation in the U. S. dollar worsens the U. S. terms of trade such that it initially offsets the improving net flow of goods and services in volume terms. But the "J-curve" effect is short term and transitional in nature, and it cannot account entirely for the slow adjustment of the U. S. current account imbalance.
