... neutron production is a vital concern in a spallation system. The ultimate goal of the system design is to produce as many neutrons as ideally possible. However, in the practical engineering neutron production is a much more complicated matter. It has to be a balance between the technical constraints imposed by the performance requirements from other concerns in the system and their corresponding economic costs.

D'autres dispositifs nucléaires que les réacteurs nucléaires actuels, visant à réduire la quantité de déchets radioactifs et à accroître la sûreté des réacteurs, ont été imaginés : systèmes spallateurs, réacteurs hybrides accélérateur/réacteur sous-critique. Ces systèmes fonctionnent avec des particules chargées accélérées (proton, deuton, ...) dans la gamme dite des énergies intermédiaires : de 20 MeV à plusieurs GeV. Ces particules chargées de grande énergie provoquent dans un matériau approprié fait d'atomes riches en neutrons, appelé cible de spallation, des réactions de spallation qui se manifestent par une fragmentation du noyau en plusieurs entités : des particules légères (neutrons, protons, ...) et des groupements de nucléons résiduels désignés par les termes de clusters, résiduels ou produits de spallation.
