BARE-ROOT SEEDLING [3 records]

Record 1 2016-03-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Planting Techniques (Farming)
  • Nurseries (Farming)
  • Silviculture
DEF

A seedling grown in a container and that is to be planted with roots still in its growth medium.

CONT

Containerized seedlings have advantages.... These include improving survival and growth of some species, extending the planting season, adjusting planting time for adverse sites... For the near future, the use of containerized seedling should become a valuable supplement to bare-root seedlings.

CONT

OBS

Seedlings are grown in nursery seedbeds and lifted from the soil in which they are grown to be planted in the field.

OBS

In bare-root nurseries, seedlings are grown in exposed seedbeds under specialized farming practices, removed from the soil, and shipped to the planting site with roots bare.

Record 3 1984-07-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nurseries (Farming)
  • Silviculture
CONT

A comparatively recent development in seedling production is the use of container techniques.... This technique was originally established by foresters in cold, northern climates, where the difficulties of successfully producing and planting conventional bare-root seedlings were substantial.... Under some conditions it offers a number of advantages : flexibility of production, improved success in seedling survival on some sites, and extension of the planting season.

CONT
