Bat nicknames have survived long usage, some of the more enduring being "lumber," "wood," "wand," "willow," "war club," "stick," "shillelagh." A bat is still called the "hickory" because it used to be made of the hardwood, although white ash has long since proved more satisfactory. The [term] "white tongue" as a synonym dates to the 1880s when A.G. Spalding advertised for 100,000 wagon tongues to be turned into bats. 5, record 6, English, - bat

There are a number of bat and ball games played only in certain parts of the world. Most of theses games are variations of cricket or baseball.... Rounders is an English game. It is often played as a casual game with a stick and a ball, but it has a proper set of rules. It is played 9-a-side, and each side has two innings. The batsmen use a wooden bat called a stick and try to score rounders. The bowler bowls with a smooth underarm action from a distance of 24 1/2 feet(7. 5 m). The four bases are posts 3 ft. 11 in.(1. 2 m) high. The batsman tries to hit the ball and then run around the outside of the posts to the fourth post in order to score a rounder. To score, you have to reach the fourth post on your own hit. If you stop at a post, you may run home when a teammate hits the ball, but you do not score. You join the end of the batting line. You can be out if the ball is caught, or if a fielder touches you or the post with the ball. When all the batsmen are out, the innings is over. 3, record 12, English, - rounders

2, record 12, French, - balle%20au%20camp

A batter has an at bat every time he faces a pitcher, except in the following circumstances: He receives a base on balls (BB). He is hit by a pitch (HBP). He hits a sacrifice fly or a sacrifice hit (also known as sacrifice bunt). He is awarded first base due to interference or obstruction, usually by the catcher. The inning ends while he is still at bat (due to the third out being made by a runner caught stealing, for example). In this case, the batter will come to bat again in the next inning, though he now has no balls or strikes on him. Note that just because a player is described as being "at bat" in this sense, he will not necessarily be given an at bat in his statistics; the phrase actually signifies a plate appearance (assuming it is eventually completed).
