A rubber, plastic or metal projection screwed or inserted into a hole in the sole or heel of a sports shoe(baseball, football, soccer, lacrosse, luge, bobsleigh, etc.,) to ensure a better grip and greater traction and to prevent the athlete from falling or sliding while running, throwing or hitting.

Cleats are typically flattened or rounded cones usually no thicker or longer than 1/2 inch.

A cylindrical instrument used to hit a baseball, usually made of wood and tapered at one end.

A bat is made of one piece of solid wood or from a block of wood consisting of two or more pieces bonded together in such a way that the grain direction is parallel to the length of the bat. It can be as long as 42 inches [though 36 or 37 inches is rarely exceeded for a baseball bat, and as long as 34 inches for a softball bat] and must not exceed a diameter of 2 3/4 inches [2 1/4 inches for a softball bat] at its thickest part. Tape or another sticky substance may be applied to the handle to permit a better grip, but should not be higher than 18 inches [10 to 15 inches for a softball bat] up the handle.

Bat nicknames have survived long usage, some of the more enduring being "lumber," "wood," "wand," "willow," "war club," "stick," "shillelagh." A bat is still called the "hickory" because it used to be made of the hardwood, although white ash has long since proved more satisfactory. The [term] "white tongue" as a synonym dates to the 1880s when A.G. Spalding advertised for 100,000 wagon tongues to be turned into bats.

A proper grip allows you to release the club correctly and powerfully through the ball while maintaining a firm hold from the start of the swing to the finish.

In golf, right-handed players grip the top of the club with the left hand, and left-handed players, with the right hand. Three major grips are used to hit the ball with woods or irons : the "overlapping grip" or "Vardon grip"; the "interlocking grip"; and the "ten-finger grip" or "baseball grip".

An alternative to chalk. Resin (or "pine tree resin" to use its full name) is made from the yucky stuff that sticks to your hands when you touch a pine tree. Because resin is mostly colorless, it is preferred to chalk in some areas. But caution: Don’t let the color fool you. Resin can do permanent damage to the rock and in fact is not allowed anywhere in the US for that reason.

Resign bag. It is a large cloth with powdered resin placed in the middle, tied with a string and used for "thwacking" against holds for extra adhesion.

According to Gary Norton, Director of the Alpine Club of Canada in Toronto, it is the same kind of resin used in baseball(rosin), a solid piece broken down into powder; it improves grip.

On réfère souvent à la dernière des trois façons que je viens de mentionner comme la prise «prise baseball», «plein main» ou «dix doigts». Je vous avoue qu'elle est très inhabituelle de nos jours. Cette prise était souvent recommandée aux jeunes enfants, aux dames avec de petites mains et aux golfeurs plus matures (seniors) dont les muscles ont un peu amolli avec les années d'expériences passées. Le principe de base voulait que le golfeur encercle mieux le bâton en utilisant la «prise de baseball» et assure, ainsi, plus de force et de stabilité dans son élan.
