Use of immobilized enzymes in an expanded or fluidized bed has certain advantages over use of immobilized enzymes in a fixed bed. The most important advantages of such operations are that plugging is totally avoided and that it is possible to use substrates containing particulate materials. In spite of these advantages, almost all industrially enzyme-catalyzed continuous processes in which immobilized enzymes are used are performed in fixed bed, among other reasons because in an expanded or fluidized bed the particles having enzymatic activity are worn down during operation as a result of collisions between the individual particles. 1, record 3, English, - fixed%20bed

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Methods for enzyme immobilization can be classified into three basic categories as follows. 1) Carrier-binding method: the binding of enzymes to water-insoluble carriers. 2) Cross-linking method: intermolecular cross-linking of enzymes by means of bifunctional or multifunctional reagents. 3) Entrapping method: incorporating enzymes into the lattice of a semipermeable gel or enclosing the enzymes in a semipermeable polymer membrane. 2, record 4, English, - enzyme%20immobilization
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The technique has two advantages : expensive enzymes can be recovered and used again; the enzyme can be used in a variety of configurations of bioreactors that permit continuous operation. These include packed bed continuous-fed columns and expanded bed systems. A wide range of techniques are used for enzyme immobilization. These are similar in many ways to the techniques used to produce preparations of immobilized cells. 1, record 4, English, - enzyme%20immobilization

Dynamic adsorption. The most common mode of adsorptive separation process employs a fixed bed, cyclic operation. As the wet process stream enters the fresh molecular-sieve bed, the water vapor is adsorbed in a finite length of bed called a mass-transfer zone(MTZ), the bed length through which the concentration of the adsorbate is reduced from essentially inlet to outlet conditions. As wet gas continues to flow, the bed may be divided into three distinct zones; the dynamic equilibrium zone with inlet gas, the MTZ, and the remaining active zone. In most molecular-adsorption systems, the MTZ becomes stabilized because of its favorable isotherm and moves at a constant speed. The bed is exhausted when the leading edge of the MTZ reaches the outlet end of the bed. High effective capacity results from high dynamic equilibrium capacity and a short MTZ. 1, record 12, English, - dynamic%20adsorption
