On November 11, Saint Martin's day, children in Flanders, the northern parts of the Netherlands, the Catholic areas of Germany and in Austria participate in paper lantern processions. Often, a man dressed as Saint Martin rides on a horse in front of the procession. The children sing songs about Saint Martin and about their lantern. The food traditionally eaten on the day is goose. According to legend, Martin was reluctant to become bishop, which is why he hid in a stable filled with geese. The noise made by the geese betrayed his location to the people who were looking for him. Also in the east part of the Belgian province East-Flanders, children receive presents from Saint Martin on November 11, instead of from Saint Nicholas on December 6, or Santa Claus on December 25.

Ardennais, also known as the Belgian Ardennais or Ardennes, is a heavy-boned yet agile breed from the Ardennes region of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. It is one of the earliest heavy breeds, with a recent strong infusion of Brabant blood for size and strength. It has a compact body, short back, and massive legs that are often covered with feathering. The Ardennais is easy to handle and, having developed in a harsh environment, is naturally hardy and economical to keep.
