Record 7 2000-09-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction Materials
CONT

In building penetration-macadam pavement, a base, usually of crushed stone or gravel, is constructed in layers and firmly compacted by rolling. Often during the rolling, water is applied to make what is termed a water-bound base, or macadam. Then, the keyed and wedged fragments in the upper portion of the base are bonded in place by working alternate applications of bituminous material and choke stone into the surface voids.

CONT

Penetration macadam construction is a surface treatment that is generally regarded as being a more heavy-duty type.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Matériaux de constr. (Voies de circulation)
DEF

the ratio of the cycles to failure of the fabric reinforced specimens to the control specimen without fabric.

CONT

The key toward the reinforcement-based design of geotextiles in reflective crack prevention in bituminous pavement overlays is the fabric' s effectiveness as determined by laboratory testing or experience. Quantitatively, it is defined as follows : FEF=Nr/Nn where FEF=fabric effectiveness factor, Nr=number of load cycles to cause failure in the fabric-reinforced case, Nn=number of load cycles to cause failure in the nonreinforced case. Values of FEF vary widely when based on laboratory tests(as they usually are), the range being from 2. 1 to 15. 9....

OBS

Geogrid: A deformed or nondeformed netlike polymeric material used with foundation, soil, rock, earth, or any other geotechnical engineering-related material as an integral part of human-made project structure or system.

CONT

The porous friction course consists of an open-graded, bituminous surface course composed of mineral aggregate and bituminous material, mixed in a central mixing plant, and placed on a prepared surface.... This friction course is deliberately designed not only to improve the skid-resistance but to reduce aquaplaning incidence by providing a "honeycomb" material to ensure a quick drainage of water from the pavement surface direct to the underlying impervious asphalt. The porous friction course is able, because of its porosity and durability, to maintain over a long period a constant and relatively high wet friction value.
